My Avid says " Your system is not lincensed to run this software"

Funny thing about that is...I bought the student version which is a 5.2. I couldn't view anything when i installed it. I could hear the audio and when i scrubbed through the timeline i saw the clips that i stopped on, it just wouldn't show anything if i hit the play button. Anyhow, i was told by Avid to buy the upgrade. I did, i bought the 5.6 upgrade online, it didn't upgrade the software, only the dongle, so Avid got frustrated with it after much trouble shooting and sent me a copy on CD. Of course it asked me to uninstall version 5.2 and i did. Then when i tried to run the new version, it says my system isn't lincensed to run the software. I don't quite understand.
My computer is an HP nW 8440.
Any suggestions? Please don't tell me to contact Avid again, it took me over two months to get the CD and it takes way too long to get help when you call.
Another thing is, I a in Jamaica and i do not know anyone at the moment that uses AVID, Jamaica seems to rock with final cut!

I had a similar problem recently and found out I had to upgrade the software. I'm running the student version on mac and it worked just fine several months ago - but the other day I got that same message. Turns out I had upgraded my Mac OSX version and, in turn, needed to upgrade Avid as well. I purchased the software - installed it and everything was fine. I might try upgrading the app as well - and not just the dongle.

It sounds like you missed a step when installing the software. That message means that there's a problem with the key information on your dongle. I would suggest uninstalling all of the Avid components on your computer, pulling out the install documentation, and following it line by line again and see if that solves it.

If that doesn't work, then you might document those steps here and see if anyone can help after seeing everything you went through.

Good luck.

If I remember correctly, Avid have to email you a dongle upgrade file, which you then run to tell the dongle it's authorised for the new version. Are you sure you did that?

If not, there could be a problem with the dongle drivers: I've had some pain with them in the past, though with Fusion rather than Avid.

Yes, you must update the dongle again once you get v5.5 and above. A dongle update is usually required every half point release (usually a purchase). For example, v5.0 then v5.5.

Follow the dongle update instructions Avid gave you when you purchased your latest upgrade.

------

Dongle Updating:

After upgrading/updating your Avid software you must update your dongle before being able to use it with the new version
If you try to launch Avid and you get a message telling you that your system is not licensed to run the software, you’ll need to update your dongle.

1. Obtaining a versioner or dongle updater.
a. If you have a support contract or are eligible for a free upgrade, you can email warranty@avid.com to obtain an updater. Be sure to include your system ID and dongle serial number.
b. If you need to purchase the upgrade follow the instructions here:
http://www.avid.com/onlinesupport/supportcontent.asp?productID=97&contentID=10298&typeID

2. Updating the dongle- The dongle updater file that you need is the DBHelper.exf file. Know where you have it saved on your system.
ON a PC:
a. Open My Computer \ C drive \ProgramFiles\Avid\Utilities\DongleUpdater Place the DBHelper.exf file inside this folder next to, but not on top of, the dongle updater application.
b. Double click on the dongle updater application.
c. Click Update. You will be told that your dongle was successfully updated.
d. Close the updater windows and you are free to launch the Avid software.

ON a MAC:
a. Open up Mac HD. Click on Application \ Utilities \ Dongle Updater. Place the DBHelper.exf file inside this folder next to, but not on top of, the dongle updater application.
b. Double click the dongle updater application
c. Click Update. You will be told that your dongle was successfully updated.
d. Close the updater windows and you are free to launch the Avid software.

Bakeshow, i am wondering now if i should have bought a Mac. Not only does it seem mow to me that they are better but i would be able to use final cut on it.
Thx though

KRESTOFRE,

I did think about the possibility that i missed a step but it all seemed at the moment very clear cut. See when i place the Upgrade CD in the computer, it located the older version and prompted me to delete it. When i did that, it pretty much just kept asking me to hit the next button. I will try what you said tonight though. Thanks

Mark G and DC, i will try going to the website again after i reinstall version 5.6 and upgrade my dongle again. See when i hit the DB helper and upgrade the dongle from there, it sayd dongle upgrade but i will try it from scratch now.
Thanks

Both PC's and Macs have a similar dongle update process. For some reason, your dongle appears to not be updated correctly. If you already went through the steps to update your dongle from the file Avid emailed you, then there might be a bigger problem.

My suggestion, which I've done before, is simply to email Avid customer support. Explain the problem and provide them with the order ID of the software upgrade you purchased. Also, provide them with your dongle tag ID codes. Ask them to generate a new dongle updater file. Then update your dongle again with that. I suspect it will work at that point.

This problem is on the Avid website in the support forums. It has a problem to do only with the student version. Type in those keywords and it should come up. It has something to do with an error on Avid's part.
