Metacorder or Boom Recorder

Does anyone have experience with one or the other or both? Oh, and would it be necessary for me to have a mixing board between my Powerbook and Motu Traveler? Can I record in the field with Logic Pro and has anyone done it with experiences to share? I know some if not all of this info is on the board somewhere, but I can't find it. If you have a link I would love to look at it. I thank you in advance for you time and help.

Oleg is pointing towards a place where you can talk to more people with experience with those programs. The only person on this board that uses BoomRecorder is Phil (at least the only one that has publicly annouced it). RAMPS, otoh, has quite a few people who use it regularly. First try a search there and then ask your question.

Cheers

Try to remeber that you are asking for help and Oleg is always willing to give an answer (he doesn't want to do all of your work for you).

Here's the quick run down on the two:

Cost:
BoomRecorder (BR): ~$220
MetaCorder (MC): ~$1500

Copy Protection:
BR: None
MC: Dongle, will not be replaced if lost or broken, you're SOL

Support from Author:
BR: Amazing. Take responds, listens and implements new versions on a very regular basis.
MC: (Feedback from others, I've never tried) Argumentative, little or no real support, little or no new innovation

Features:
BR and MC are essentially the same (though some MC users seem to feel the feature set is better). Unlike Protools and the other post production tools, BR and MC are designed to work as location recording tools. Roll, Scene and Take information are all automatically managed and inserted into the metadata in the BWF header, along with Timecode and notes. They both create ISO track recordings, that can either be single file poly wave files or separate mono wave files (the way I record). BR also generates a very well organized, overly-detailed sound report automatically.

Please do a search here for Boom Recorder (or BoomRecorder, I think I write it both ways) and you can see a couple of very detailed reports on my use of BR, setup, and a sample of the sound report.

Let me know if you have any questions after that.

Wow Phil. The difference in price between Metacorder and BoomRecorder is tremendously HUGE! Take me out on one of your projects so I can actually take a look. I've already seen the timesheet generated by BoomRecorder, but it makes sense to see it in action.

I ... n.e.e.d ... t.o ... s.e.e ... i.t. :crybaby:

You can try out the two track version of Boom Recorder or only $20. It's very nice. I just bought the 2 track version so I could play around with it and I don't often have any call for recording more tracks. Plus you get a discount that is actually a bit more than you paid if you choose to upgrade to the full version. Gallery (Metarecorder) is known of spotty support. Some are happy with them but I don't personally know anyone that has had a good experience.

Oh, and one other thing - if you have a credit card that doesn't charge for foreign currency purchases, then you can buy BR in Euros and get another discount.

Phil

Scott,
Thanks for the info. $20 for 2 track sounds decent. I might as well give a chance and try that version. Isn't it kind of odd to bring your laptop or even a desktop to record 2 tracks?

Phil,
Looks like BR is taking a lot of advantage away from MC due to customer and product support rates. There has been some discussions on the board about BR and MC. The more I read about them, the more I feel about BR's GUI and convenience. Honestly, look at their price difference! Even though BR is much cheaper in price compared to Metacorder, BR is a very good alternative or even priorirty to production recording. Good choice Phil.
