Panasonic's HPX500 Announcement

Apparently they're using the SDX900 chipset (which is 960x540 I think?) and using the same spatial offset technology.

I think that's the reason it's cheaper. Looks like they're positioning it to compete with sony xdcam 350.

Anybody have any idea how much the AG-HPG10 P2 HD player/recorder is gonna hold?

JVC have the HD110 / HD100 with a lens that sell for half the price

I think Panasonic is missing a trick here. No lens for $15,000 well that counts all of us out. JVC have the HD110 / HD100 with a lens that sell for half the price.

Ok it wont be up to the same standard as a $15000 lens but at least it will get you going.

For some jobs i have to have a shoulder mounted camera just to look the part to the client. If Panasonic could release this camera with an affordable get you going lens lens like JVC i would buy this camera.

I think most of us just want a sholder mounted DVX 200

Don~t forget. 15,000 is Panasonic Offficial price. Dealers might get this cam selling at 14 000, or less. Also, you can get a decent USED lens for the sdx (they should work and resolve well, no?) for about 4 to 3000 USD.

If I was to start a production house today, I would go for this cam without doubt.

Looks pretty good (compare price to XDcam), things have been moving along well here and I could see the need for one of these in the coming year.

It's just one more tool priced in a spot designed to tempt those who might want a camera that delivers greater performance than ever before -for the cost. And if you're wanting to take advantage of the abilities of this camera, you would definitely appreciate wanting to pick and choose your own glass instead of being forced to buy something as a 'package'. Glass is incredibly important...and yes you could probably get away with an SD lens if it is good enough, but if you're a serious filmmaker who makes his/her living in the industry delivering broadcast quality content, and therefore have your name attached to the project for millions to see, you're going to want to ensure you have acceptable images when they're being seen in HD.

I'd be interested to see a lens test with this camera: SD vs. HD lenses. I'm sure the HD lens will be better, but by how much? Since the camera uses SD sensors from the SDX900, you may not need the resolving power of an HD lens. An SD lens may be more than good enough, especially for a tight budget. Just look at the great pictures from the SDX900 with SD lens.

Typically, the differences between the SD & HD glass is quite dramatic. I'm not sure how much of an effect it will have on the HPX500 without having further data, but I'd be willing to bet that you'll want to stick with HD glass.

Which 35mm adapter would fit on this camera ?

If so...A HD SDX with big pixels with super narrow DOF.

I think it would compensate for the slight lower resolution compared to the HPX 2000

antoine, with 3 2/3 inch chips and a nice HD lense, I doubt you would want to stick a 35mm adapter on.... your DOF is already going to be pretty shallow

but if you want it even shallower (is that a word?) then yeah, throw a redrock on it

The Pro35 from P&S Technik (the makers of the Mini35 adapter) is a fairly decent 2/3" lens adapter that will work on the HPX500. You can get Arri, Nikon, Canon, Panavision, and BNC-R mounts for the Pro35.

You'd also do well to just rent DigiPrimes, some of the most amazing lenses I've ever seen.

First I've seen it mentioned, outside of that mockup shown at DV Expo. I believe that there's no hard drive at all, so it records directly to the cards. In that context, it will hold as much as your card capacity, so with a 32GB card it'd hold 32GB. Wait, scratch that, double it. Looks like it has two slots, so two 32GB cards = max. of 64GB. Bigger or smaller cards will mean, obviously, bigger or smaller capacity in the unit.

I believe it has some sort of 1394 and usb passtrough... So you could theoretically get a firewire or USB drive and copy the P2 drive's content to it... Am I wrong?

Almost certainly, but again, it wouldn't be from a drive, it'd be from the cards.

Unless they changed it and added an internal drive, but I believe all the reports from DV Expo said that there was no drive in it.

The SDX900 is 525,000 pixels. ..

Actually the SDX chip set is 620,000. If you have ever seen the SDX 24P blown up to HD ort 35mm, then you have an idea of what this camera's footage will look like. Also the announcement was that the list price of the camera was $14,000.

Best,

jan

Thanks Jan, this camera sounds like a really interesting product. I have shot with the SDX and can confirm that it is a very high resolution device and its noise performance is equally impressive. With a $14,000 list, the HPX500 sounds like it will be a real winner.

I am very excited to see this camera first hand!

Jan I will have to take your word for it -but I got my info straight from the Panny US site.

I would love to know what Panasonic has done to justify the price differential. Would you care to elaborate? It would take the speculation out of any future comments/threads.
