Connecting Firestore Panasonic DVCPRO HD with HDV Cameras(other brands)

Has anyone tried recording to a Firestore FS-100 using Panasonic DVCPRO HD Codec from any of the HDV cameras out there, such as the Canon, JVC, or Sony? (Thus bypassing the HDV codec all together! ) It seems like it is just a firewire input and Firestore device shouldn't care what is being fed in to it.

Thanks

I believe only HDV comes out of that firewire port on the cams mentioned.

You can't record to a format on the FS-100 that isn't supported by the camera. The cam supplies the codec, not the FS-100.

Correct, the FS-100 (and all firestores, for that matter) can only record the data stream that's present on the firewire connection. An HDV camcorder outputs either an HDV transport stream, or DV. That can only be recorded as HDV, or as DV depending on which one the camera is sending.

A FireStore can't "transcode" from one format to the other.

And an FS-100 has no capability to record an HDV data stream.

However, it does care. It needs to make sense of the data arriving from the camera, and HDV is not supported.

It even goes beyond that -- the FS-100 exists in two versions, one for NTSC and one for PAL. You cannot connect the NTSC version to an HVX202 and record PAL footage with it.

I appreciate the response to my question. It seems very difficult getting the best of all worlds at this price range of camera: High resolution, good codec and long lens (manual preferred).
I keeping thinking that there must be a way to combine products to get all of this.

My other thought is an HVX200 with 2X tele extender. I am wondering if the lens length would then be comparible to Canon XLH1 or the JVC with Fujinon lens.( I hear the Fujinon isn't as sharp)

Also, I am not exactly clear on the Panasonic DVCPRO HD codec.(be it P2 card or Firestore) I understand what it does with 720 24p,30p and 60p, but does it do 1080 24p, 30p ? I seem to read conflicting information. If it does only 1080i, then does it at least give you the look of progressive, because it performed a pulldown conversion(like the way 24p goes to tape on the DVX).

Thanks

HVX with 1.6x matches JVC's telephoto length; with 2x it matches XLH1.

HVX DVCPRO-HD supports 1080/24p and 1080/30p, embedded in a 60i stream. Pure progressive, carried in an "interlaced basket." Just like the DVX, and you can use similar methods to extract the pulldown and revert the footage to pure progressive.
