FS-100 Firmware Upgrade More Time????

I just did my firmware upgrade to 3.0 on my FS-100
I thought that i was going to gain more recording time while i was shooting in HD.
I selected DVCPROHD then selected Quicktime
And on my HVX I chose all of the different HD formats and all I was getting was only 111 mins of recording time...
I thought I was supposed to get more?
Am I doing something wrong?
When I installed the upgrade said that it was successful???

yeah. keep looking in the menus. there is an option for PN which is Progressive Native. I did the same thing. also when not connected to the camera it still said 111mins. but when I started recording and it was set to PN it said something like 249 or so.

Is it PN by itself or Quicktime PN?
If it is Quick time PN what is the difference going to be?

Did you hit record?
My Firestore only updatd the time once I hit the record button.

As far as PN and QT PN - the difference is between recording MXF files (like those on the P2 files) and recording Quicktime MOV files.

No difference in quality.

I hit record on the different settings and still got 111 min
I want to try and record in a Quicktime mov...
I thought the HVX did not allow a PN signal out of the 1393??

Ahhh - maybe that is your problem?
You are right, the HVX does not allow a PN signal out of the firewire port (1394)...

Your HVX should be in 720/24P mode NOT in 24PN.
The firestore takes the full 60fps signal from the Firewire port and strips out the flagged duplicate frames before recording.

It's not a Native signal on the FW port. The FS does the pulldown removal on the fly.

When you first get it all hooked up, it will read 111 minutes. The first time you hit record, it may be going into Record Stand-by mode. Hit record again. The minute you see the Time Code start running on the FS, the time remaining will change to two hundred whatever it's supposed to read minutes of time left. But it has to start actually recording, you have to see TC running on the FS.

I just hooked mine up to make sure, yep, that's how it works.

Okay, so if i want a quicktime mov with the extra record time that comes with 3.0
I need to set the firestore to quicktime pn for 260 mins at 720 24p
and at P2 Pn for 264 min at 720 24p
and this only works in 720 and not 1080
Is that correct?
If i use quicktime pn , how does that duffere from regular quicktime???

This thing really is Pissing me off !! I should have invested in P2 cards !!!
I shot some test shots at 720 24p in the quicktime PN mode
I am trying to open them up in FCP...
I copied my contents folder to my hard drive and I was suppose to copy Last clip text file as well . But that wasn't in the firestore to move over.
I went through the steps in the P2 window to bring it in

"add custom Path>contents folder> open" nothing happened....
What is up with this piece of crap that i threw $1700 and change down the drain?????
Help !! Ben Balser, If your out there.. your the MAC DADDY

I've just started playing with this, and it appears that the ONLY modes you get additional time in are these circumstances:
1) you have to choose DVCPRO-HD recording
2) you have to choose either P2 PN or Quicktime PN
3) You have to set the camera to either 720/24p or 720/30p (*not* pN)
4) You have to set your "frame rate" in the scene file to match the recording format (i.e., if you're using 720/24p, you must set the frame rate to 24fps; if using 720/30p you must set the frame rate to 30fps)
4a) alternately, you could set to VIDEO CAM mode, which forces the frame rate to default.

Violate any of those steps in any way (i.e., using variable frame rates, recording 1080 mode, etc) and it'll go back to 111 minutes max.

If i use quicktime pn , how does that duffere from regular quicktime???
Quicktime PN will strip out duplicate frames and give you the 268 minutes; regular Quicktime doesn't strip 'em out so you'll get 111 minutes. Again, all the rules above have to be followed or you'll get the 111 minutes anyway.

You shouldn't have to import anything through the P2 import window in FCP if you shot Quicktime PN files.
You should have Quicktime files on your firestore that you can drop directly into FCP.

I've done this and I just bring the files into FCP like any other Quicktime file on my computer.

Hey AJMax, when I first got my firestore, I was all confused as far as how to use it. Even now, I don't use it to its full potential, but coming from someone that is learning and trying things out, I think you'll really like the fact that you can do test shots for a long time without having to worry about dumping the p2 cards to a laptop or a computer or something else. its a pain to have to cary something extra, and power it, and get the Firmware upgrade, but It is a really nice solution for extra storage.
Just my opinion.
Hope you get yours working. Mine has been doing great.

QuickTime mode has to record at 60fps or the FCP FRC will not be able to conform it to your Sequence's editing time base.

Waiting to hear about VFR in P2 mode. But I'm going to assume it has something to do with the way the FS is forced to do the pulldown on the fly. Remember, Panny crippled that FW port, so Focus is jumping through hoops to get these functions into the FS-100.

And yes, when you record in either of the QT modes, there's no P2 data, so the CONTENTS folder will be empty. There will be another folder with a long ass number for a name, that begins with the date you shot, it has all your QT clips in it.

I am also disappointed with the FS-100. The fact that it's impossible to roll and pause from the camera trigger when recording DVCPRO-HD with or without a tape in the camera is problematic. If I had to do it all over again, I would have been better off investing my $1875.00 into a 2nd P2 Store and another 8gb card. For me, the P2 format has been rock solid. The 3.0 upgrade helps but I feel I can't trust the unit to record like the cards and p2 Store.

"The fact that it's impossible to roll and pause from the camera trigger when recording DVCPRO-HD with or without a tape in the camera is problematic."

Do you have your FS-100 set to: -

#9 OTHER FUNCTIONS: - 1394 CONTROL --> EXT or BOTH
Functions: - FA TAPELESS (short cut to set the control mode to "TAPELESS")

Double check those settings and your record button should work.

And Barry, did I read that right - you can't record in version 3 in 1080 and get PN???

yeah Jim,
I've been recording with the camera button.
I hit the left button to goto CONTROL and then i go down to SYNCRO SLAVE.
if you are plugged into the camrea this should put you on RecPause. and when you hit the record button it shows up as recording. this also shows up on your lcd on the camera, so if its recording it lets you know. Once set, no need to go back and check the FS100. so far pretty reliable for me. hasn't missed a beat.

If the 1394 CONTROL is set to EXT on the cam, you can use the record and pause button on the cam without issue.

Also make certain CONTROL is set to TAPELESS

There is no 'native' recording (PN) in 1080 mode on the HVX, period.
So that means no PN recording on the P2 cards either - not just the Firestore.
