Oktava MK012 "rough" indoor shooting

Our feature film "Townies" will be shot on all handheld DVX and there will be a great deal of documentary style jerking and swift movements of the camera. The Oktava MK012 "on a boom" will be doing just the same amount of thrashing around to keep up.

We haven't ordered the Octava MKO12 yet, but I hear it is very sensitive.

We are using the RODE NTG2 for rough outdoor shooting.

Oktava MK012 Question:

Is it a bad idea shooting indoor scenes for a documentary/reality style movie with the Octava MK012?

If you do you have to get the best shockmount (K-Tek KSSM with soft bands, $100 trewaudo.com), The Rycote Baby Ball Gag ($140 @ trew), the furry Jammer ($70 trew) and a good carbon fiber boom (like the Gitzo 12.5' CF $250 trew). Even then you are pushing it. You may want to look at something less prone to vibration, wind problems (and still get the stuff I listed).

add some nice preaqmp in front with low cut filter and you will be fine with handling noise .
you dont need baby ball for interials at all , good foam and good suspension
the psc one or AT with better rubers from k-tek is good enouth for every mic of this lenght

Thanks. Could you tell me the product name of each of the items you described? Not sure what preaqmp, low cut filter, suspension, psc, AT, or rubers are. Links to products would be fine and great. Thanks Oleg 2.

Oleg knows far more than I, but I really think that you need better wind protection if you plan on swinging the boom hard with this mic.

i swing the schoeps hard with 3$ foam -so why it would be different ?
for normal internal use you dont need more , if you will fly to fast you can add another 3 $ bigger foam above , the rycote is a waste of money for this kind of work , be tuned it may have a nice competitor in short time :-)

Yep, I can swing a schoeps pretty hard with zero foam on it (keep it on there for safety anyways). The Oktava distorts with just the mildest of movement. The "heavy" foam will help but a BBG will be far more effective and sonically transparent.

Cheers

you cant whith zero foam , the hyper capsules are sencitive to wind , what ever brand they are the air flow is problematic .
, it really doesnt work for dialog on the move. for static it can but we are not shootig postcards all the tome .
what work for my mbho ,akg and schoeps work to the octava as well , and i have 2 of these as well , dont use them as i dont like them to much but there is no diference , you need foam , you dont need baby ball .

Maybe I should skip the Oktava all together? What other brand/model is just as good that I can beat the crap out of. It needs to be good enough quality of mic/sound to not scare off distributors. There's nothing I can't stand worse than watching an "indie" with bad audio. "Let's listen to heels on the kitchen floor for 2 hours."

Here is a link to my post talking about different hyper options

It lists the other options. I really like my oktava though and for the money, you can't beat it. I think the BBG and kssm shouldn't scare you away. A good shockmount is essential for any mic you get and the bbg is even usuable outside with jammer. It is a blimp (very transparent) and have you looked at the blip prices for shotguns? They are $4-800. The BBG is cheap!

Shawn uses the blueline, but he mentions having to use the BBG for a blueline in this post.

before you skip on something , maybe is abetter to learn how you actually recording , better mic is nothing in hands of person who dont know how to use it properly .

you can choose , what you like more , the at would act better with k-tek bands , also would work with short shotgun if you will deside to place that in the future

gotham sound in NY that i work with them lately as they were the most flrexible for me ( shopping from 10000km away:-)) , dont know if they carry the whale stuff , probably .
but eventully go with these who will give you the better price and fast shipping, good return policy .
check also trew , tai audio , and coffey sound and b@h

if you call gotham ask for Jim Guzzi and say hello from me
best

also all of these sites do have consigment pages , check used , since you can find something better or better price ,dont fear from scratches as long as it works :-)
