Best laptop for hvx200?

yes, that was my question of inserting the p2 card into a pc laptop and connecting my triple interface lacie drive which has usb, firewire 400 and 800 and downloading the footage to that drive. so it looks like transfer via firewire will be the fastest download w/ firewire 800 being the fastest?

FW800 is potentially capable of twice the speed of FW400. USB claims a higher maximum potential bandwidth, but for actual throughput FW400 is more solid. So yes it should be, in order from slowest to fastest: USB, FW400, FW800.

However, it also depends on your drive. Most drives aren't fast enough to tax USB's data transfer rate, but extremely few drives are fast enough to take advantage of FW800's data rate. You'd typically need a RAID drive to see any benefit from FW800 over FW400.

Why is it Panasonic won't make any P2 software for Macs?? The P2 viewer is PC. The new macbook pro's don't have PCMCIA slots. FinalCut has P2 software but why hasn't anyone made it easier to get these damn P2 cards ingested for field production?? I've been searching for a G4 Macbook pro for days now and that seems to be my only option. Except firestore. And i've got to wait till JULY(hopefully) for a cineporter. Anybody have any ideas??

Yes -- get a PC laptop for field ingest. Many of us do exactly that, and it works very, very well. You can still edit on FCP, just use the WinXP station for ingest.

I believe they said the duel-systems adapter will go for 119. But I'm not 100% positive. Somehwere around there anyways.

$119? Then it seems that the MBP would be the way to go with the eXpress slot and Duel adaptor. Oh yeah, the unreliablity factor on Mac. Any new updates on this issue?

The only irritating thing about the adapter is that it will be one more thing you have to lug around with you, and which can break.

im new to the game i need a notebook (at least i think i do)
so what is the best overall notebook to get ?
i have a Hvx 200.

i think i found one that might be good for me, but in the specs where it says PCMCIA slot it has ExpressCard/54 - is that the same thing? will my p2 cards work with this??

here's the laptop i'm looking at getting: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...ategoryId=pcmcat103700050028&id=1166236071888

i think it has most of Barry's requirements...if there's anything that stands out i may have missed let me know because i may pick this up at the start of next week (i love tax time baby ).

My take on a laptop is a bit different as I would only use it as a storage devise. I would only look for three things: PCMCIA slot, RAID 1, and the ability to run the P2 viewer. To run the P2 viewer simply requires that the CPU support SSE2 instructions, which most modern ones do.

Check out www.pro-star.com to build a custom laptop to fit your needs. You can probably build something stout enough to do editing, but I'm not sure what type of large storage solution you can make work.

yea, that's what i think i'll probably end up using it for - p2 viewer, pcmcia slot and hard drive. then take it home and edit on FCP...but will the p2 cards work in an ExpressCardslot?
