P2 glitch similar to 'tape hits'

Someone mentioned a poll a few pages back so I thought I'd weigh in having multiple machines/cameras. I have 2 HVX200s, eight 4 gig cards, 3 G4 PBs, 2 MacBook Pros, 4 G5 duals. Have processed approximately 400-500 card dumps (based on the number of backup DVDs I have of these).
My partner and I have offloaded using both PCMIA and firewire direct from cameras.
More often than not, the P2 cards are write protected, but not always.
The only problem I have experienced repeatedly but intermitently is offloading to a G4 17inch 1.67GHz powerbook which freezes up when using the PCMIA slot about once every 3 or 10 downloads. I have not lost a frame that I know of due to corrupt data.

I have tried to troubleshoot the G4 1.67 Ghz freeze ups, but being a random problem, it defies getting it down to a simple pattern. My gut feeling is there was some 3rd party software conflict in the 17inch because it was not one of our machines and other 17inch 1.67 ghz have been known to run trouble free.

The major problem that others have pointed out here is that it is difficult to troubleshoot due to its randomness and small number of people it's affecting. I suspect that it will probably have to do with more than one single element...possibly the driver software conflicting with something else. (Alas we no longer have Conflict Catcher for OSX).

I have one suggestion though...create another startup drive with only the base Apple configuration...install FCP and the P2 drivers, start your mac up on that drive and see if that helps. If it does, it could point to a 3rd party software conflict with the p2 driver...if it doesn't help, then at least you've eliminated that possibility. My gut says its a software thing and probably a combination of mixing one thing with another because if it was just hardware, it would be causing a lot more problems than we are seeing now.

I'm a sunny California PC user also.
And I don't have dropouts. :)
Just playing with ya, but enjoying California and our PC's
