What is your favorite cinegraphic (what is the real term for this? LOL) moments in film/tv?

One of my favorites of all time is when the car is on fire in Crash. I won't say more in case it is a spoiler for anyone, but it is one of the most amazing moments I have ever seen!

I also love tracking and crane shots; especially when they are logistically difficult and have a long run time.

Your turn!

Hmmm..any of the obvious shots from Apocolypse Now and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Strange, but the first shot that comes to my mind is in the the first LotR, when it's nighttime and right before the hobbits are running in the wood. There is a wide shot of the landscape and you think it's an est shot but then the nasgul (sp?) comes in on his horse. Creepy.

Actually, any moment in any of those movies is pretty good.

Second that, watched it again the other night on a 44in lcd WOW one of the most beautiful films. I also love the steadicam action in "The Shining" (my fav movie)

Kewl

Kewl

Looks like we're on our way to racking up a great list of films anyone should watch for cinemagraphic pleasure... LOL

I think Crash has a lot of great moments...
Sin City is great; love the lighting.
I was impressed with the tracking shot at the beginning of Snake Eyes, but never watched the film.
The tracking shot in A Touch of Evil was great as well.
Of course the intro of Saving Private Ryan changed my thoughs on cinematography.....in a beautiful way.

My most recent would be the 9min shot in children of men.
Crouching tiger was a beautiful movie

Most anything by De Palma

The elevator scene in Dressed to Kill

The train station sequence in The Untouchables

The chainsaw sequence in Scarface

The Drill killing sequence in Body Double

Like I said; most anything by De Palma

Here are the first few that come to mind:

"Jaws" - The first attack with the girl in the water
"Bridge on the River Kwai" - "My God, what have I done"
"The Godfather" - The baptism sequence
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" - Running out of the cave w/ the golden idol
"To Kill a Mockingbird" - "Miss Jean Louise, Stand up, your father's passing."
"Pulp Fiction" - Adrenaline shot to the heart
"The Shawshank Redemption" - Coming out of the tunnel into the rain.
"Network" - "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore."
"Reservoir Dogs" - The ear
"Glory" - The whipping
"Alien" - The dinner scene
"Aliens" - "Get away from her you *****"

LOTR: The Fellowship of the Ring

The crane shot over the lake of Gandalf riding up the hill in a cart to Bag End. It's near the beginning.

One of my favorites is the Steadicam shot in Goodfellas that starts outside on the street and ends in the restaurant nightclub. It's a pretty amazing one take.

The X files: 'One Breath' Scully on a boat with a red trenchcoat just sitting there against the mist thinking of her dead father. I love that scene.

American Beauty: The scene with Lester in the garage, when the door opens and the rain is coming down.

Road to Pertition: When Paul Newman's character is killed....fantastic scene!

Anything from Pedro Almodovar...

The Road to Perdition Paul Newman scene is one of my all time favorite scenes!!!

My girlfriend would kiss you for mentioning X-files. Speaking of which there is an X-File ep set in WWII that is one huge 45 minute tracking shot. I forget the name, but awesome. In addition there is an ep that Gillian directed titled "All Things" that had some great work.

I love the chaotic camer work of shows like The Shield and Firefly. I find it amazing that they maintain the chaotic camerwork on complete CG shots in Firefly, where the 'camer work' could be precise, but they maintain the style.

On of my favorite moments was from the series "Taken" were Jesse Keys (8 year old) gets abducted from his bike shown through white lighting and his hand slowly lifting off his bike. One of the more tasteful moments of TV viewing for me.

The Goodfellas tracking shot into the dinning club is one of my favorites. Also the shot in Back to the Future where the DeLorean is first shown looking extremely cool and high tech, then Doc jumps out of it like a crazy old-guy.

The Thin Red Line - the scene where they take out the machine guns at the top of the hill

Psycho - The Death of the detective and the fall down the stairs

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind - The light from the ufo shining down on Dreyfuss at the railroad crossing.

Schindlers List
- The liquidation of the ghetto.

Once Upon A Time In The West - The train station waiting scene.

Return Of The Jedi - Emperors throne room end scene.

The Matrix Reloaded - The portion of the burly brawl from where Neo gets the metal pole to when he hits Smith into the bench. (I know it looks all fake and digital....but I really love that section of it.)

LOTR: The Two Towers - The Ents going to the Orthanc and tearing up all Saruman's shi*.

The Village - William Hurt's speech about love near the end.

A Hard Days Night - The whole time they're on the train.

Mary Poppins - George Banks walk to ...the bank through the misty streets of london.

Kill Bill vol. 1 - The Fight with the crazy 88. Vol. 2 - Pai Mai and the escape from the grave.

and probably above and beyond all others

The New World - The section of shots set to Wagner's Das Rhiengold prelude of the love between Smith and Pocahontas. It ends with the shot that pans around Q'Orianka Kilcher with the lighting strike at the end.

I find there are a lot of kewl cinematic moments in the Matrix films.

Not sure if you guys like Venture Bros, but the last ep of season "Return to Spider-Skull Island" has some really kewl 'cinematic' features/moments when Brock saves Dr. Venture. I believe it was over-dramatic and intentionally cliche, but it was awesome!
