Ski and Board in Europe, first day with HVX

This is a bit of a workflow post.

On Friday my camera arrived. Just in time for two days shooting and a deadline on monday noon. Adding Edius to my arsenal of weapons also in only a few testsessions did not make live easier.

I got the HVX with 2x8GB cards and used a USB-OTG to offload. Unfortunately the 16GB take 32 minutes (2min per GB) in the field like this. So I readjusted my workflow and now offload whenever a break comes up. So some of my mxf-folders have 2 GB only, but they were offloaded in a 5-minute break then. I mark every shot that is not worthy (put MARK on the User 3 button) and every now and then I go Thumbnail -> Marked Clips and select and delete those. This allowed me to fit many hours worth of action into 16GB during the freestyle session yesterday.

Shooting 25pN and selecting various framerates was awesome and I am really happy with my output for the first day with that camera. I need to tweak the Shutter/angle setting, but otherwise it looks sweet.

Colorsettings are taken from my experience with the DVX and it looks as good as expected. Focus Assist is a must. I often was amazed how far I was off with the normal view even though it seemed to peak in the EVF (which I have black and white). But once I have a spot I read the distance and go back to it without really checking. That makes life very easy. Much better than the normal numbered reading before.

Ok, here is my first output with the HVX and Edius. For not even having time to read of the 2 manuals I am very pleased. But criticism is welcome (and yes a few shots are "hot" when all went too fast to set up properly).
The theme is a rookie snowboard event for kids from 12 to 20. And due to lack of snow the obstacles were lame. So don´t judge the kids on this little kicker.....

QT 30MB;
I cannot get QT to get to the same compression ratio as wmv, so this is 320 wide only. Sorry Apple guys.

What is your full set-up?

HVX + 1x5400mA +2x 5600mA batteries
0,6 Century adapter (not used in this clip)
2x8GB P2
120GB USB-OTG batterypowered
Manfrotto / Bogen 525 sticks with 503 head (saving for a 516)
lots of Himaya suncream
Edius on Laptop and custommade editing-suite
320GB USB harddrive for immediate backup as soon as I get to the laptop/car/hotel
and finally I make a DDS-4 (around 25GB-30GB) tapebackup with my new HP-tapestore (external via USB, so I can backup the laptop and don´t need SCSI).
Once stuff is on the tape I delete it off the 320gigger

Of course this workflow is not tested yet. Only had this one shoot with it. But it worked exactly as I planned. Only I hoped for 1GB per minute offloading.

It took me a year to find a workflow that is workable for me. I mostly read here what people said and then combined these infos with my necessities.

I liked it, only thing I didn't like was the titles and sponsors names in the intro then sort of get lost the the black text and the black background from the spaces in the fence. Other wise for getting the camera just before and editing it on a new system with not much time I think you did a great job

agree, that insert is not very smooth. it looked okay in colour, but then I decided to stick to black-white for the foggy day and ran out of time with the logo inserts. thanks for your comment nevertheless.
