Mixer to Recorder question

Hello,

I have a question regarding the sound I’m capturing from my mixer and recorder. I’m new to using these pieces of equipment and fear I may be overlooking something simple or just a standard setting.

I’m recording using an AT4073a shotgun mic going into a DV Promix 3 mixer. I’m then using a 3.5mm cable from the mic output on the mixer to the line in input on an Edirol R-09 recorder.

The sound is fantastic when listening through the mixer and the level readings are fine. However, the recorder does not have strong readings (usually in the 40 to 30 range) and it sounds much softer after it is played back on the recorder. When I transfer the data to a computer and listen to the files on Avid they sound very, very low, even when the volume is on full blast.

Am I routing this wrong? Is there a setting I’m missing on the mixer, recorder, Avid? I’ve fiddled around with stuff but can’t improve it. Thanks a lot in advance to anyone who can help me.

I'm not familair with the DV ProMix, but if you are really using a mic-level output, then it will certainly be very low when connected to a line-level input. Is there no line-level output you could use?

It's got 2 output XLRs that can be set to line level. Does that just mean I need to get a couple XLR to 3.5mm cables to plug in the Recorder? That would make sense, I was just too stupid to realize I had to buy those extra and I was trying to make due with what it came with.

I the XLRs are the only line-level outout signals, then yes, that seems like the best path to go....

go line -10 level from the mixer xlrs outputs

the psc has limmitters on its outputs ,establish recording on r-9 you have at least -6 dbfs on loud sound
if you dont have tone on your mixer , buy plug or find source to calibrate the 0 for -12,-14 dbfs .
during the recording plug your headphones in to recorder to hear the actual recording .

I am pretty sure it does not have tone. What kind of plug do I need to buy or how can I calibrate the 0? Thanks.

im pretty sure you have the privius version
i think shure or fostex make small tone generator , cost 60 bucks or something .
you calibrate the ton will be 0 on your mixer , attunuate the mixer to -10 db on its output
connect inter connector cables 2 xlr to mini stereo
calibrate the recorder for -12 dbfs
dont forget to disconnect alc on r-9 and close it limiters ( dont remember if it has one, not sure)
you can take headphones out from the r-9 and go to mixer return , place the headphones volume in the middle , then calibrate you have the same amount of sound with 2 small potensiometers in the mixer till when you play with mixer /return switch you will hear same level
the r-9 headphone line level will be probably a bit noisy
try work with levels you dont activate the stupid mixer limiters which placed about 6 db over the zero . it would be quit hard as the microphone you use is quit hot and the stupid device dont have attenuation on its inputs .
my sudgestion is when you get few bucks replace the mixer for better work flow .
best

Don't faint when you see this recommendation:

Behringer makes a decent tone generator/cable tester combo. It's fairly small and gives you two benefits in one. You can pick it up for around $40.

yes these another 40$ you saved when you bought the mixer , there will be others , input attenuation barrels , phase reverse barrels , headphones matrix ...ms decoder
but eventually you will be very happy you get the limited sound .
as my granny used to say we to poor to buy cheap stuff:-)
