Sorry this thread's getting posted so late -- finished uploading on time but just didn't get around to starting this up.

Anyhow, our entry into the Dramafest:

A man's obsession with the past forces him to choose between the life that was or the life that can be.

Comments and feedback are always welcome!

Justin, Great to see you join the fest and looking forward to seeing your film. I really, really dig your poster. Makes me wonder if it's a film about drowning... Ahh.. my biggest fear. if not.. well, it's still a damn cool poster :)

REVIEW: BREATHE

I got more mixed feelings about this than any other fest entry. Definitely wants to sit in my top three. Two entirely different worlds coalesce in one space. Guy's obviously unforgiving of the events, and has totally emersed himself in his own troubles. Metaphorically and physically.

I am having trouble figuring out his mechanism, though. I cant' seem to guess if he has devised a way to kill himself, or was he learning to hold his breath longer and longer? This is why I am back and forth. As well, I get the inner conflict and I get it well, especially in how you present the real-time conversation inside of a memory or fleeting moment within the mind. What's really the issue is that the tangible conflict, obsession, just might have slipped by me.

What was it with the water and his weight that was so special?

However, saying that, I really think you latched onto your inner conflict and created something visible from it. I just love the fact that he went into this memory and spoke to her there. I really do like it. not that it's nothing that we haven't seen before, but it just worked for me.

It's visually haunting, almost horrific. Did you guys enter horror fest? What was your entry if so?

I'd loove to get some explanation on this, because I really liked it. It will definitely sit in the top five for me.

I really liked this one. Yes, maybe this has been done before but I loved the feel and tone. I think I will rewatch this one before giving a full review.

I think the mechanism was holding him down so he could stay down longer... but I could be wrong. I too got a little lost on how the device worked but I like I said I need to rewatch it (didn't really get Primer 100% the first time I saw it either)

I am in the SAME boat. And omg you're so right. I am very interested in BREATHE, and I think that I had this SAME feeling when I first watched PRIMER.

It was like... "okay what the hell did I just experience?".

WOW, I put this in my 'to watch again' folder, which doesn't have too many in there. This SO reminded me of THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT.

I'll get back to it with a FULL review late (after watching it and the other contenders again), but this was quite enjoyable ... great job!

Hey all,

Thanks for the feedback! Glad you guys are digging the film... This is our first entry to DVX User and all of us are new to the forum as a whole.

I only edited and did some other post on Breathe so I've asked the guy who came up with the concept to clarify any plot points... his responses should be up soon.

Anyhow, thanks again... just discovered all the entries were viewable so I've got a long night ahead =)

Well, not everyone in the Breathe crew is new here. I've been posting here for a while now. :)

Yes, VoodooXT IS not a newbie. BUT he WAS a great, GREAT help on set.

I, however, am new. I was the DP and camera op for Breathe, and came up with the original (and by that I mean earliest and far-est removed from the final product) idea for this film. I'm gonna try to address some issues about it but I'll leave the director and screenwriter to do the grunt work about the story that actually made the cut.

Okay, firstly, six minutes is a really short amount of time. Well, I guess it depends on your story. But for ours, six was short. Really short.

I guess the next thing to know is that it took even me a second viewing to make sure that all the info made it to the screen. I know the script, the story, etc. but when I watched this cut, I was slightly unsure if I was picking things up from knowing it all beforehand or if it was there. I think, however, that I'm right in saying that all the info to piece it together is there. I think.

Wow, definetely appreciate the comparison to Primer. Haven't seen The Butterfly Effect but that comment makes me want to.

Hmmmmmmmm.........what else? It's kind of a time-travel movie, kind of not. I really want the director or writer to elaborate on that so I'll leave it at that. Ask me again if they don't get to it.

Okay, I'll let them finish up. Thanks for watching. MOST of us are new here and really appreciate the feedback. Good luck with the films guys. Can't wait to start my evening................!!!!!!!!!!!!

gosh! really bad acting. it makes me want to stop watching.

oh wait. this reminds me of some movie... when he can see her killing herself...

the acting improves when the real guy leaves and the dead guy tries to change her mind.

some really cool shots of him underwater.

and that whole tub contraption? very beautiful visuals there.

interesting story, would have gone further with better actors.

Well I've not seen PRIMER, but your comment makes me want to, lol. BUTTER FLY EFFECT was great, and I think the moment you see it, you'll see the connection I'm referring to.

This flick's imagery/cinematography was just what the poster promised. I loved the colors and textures, angles and subjects of the opening montage. Pretty grim storyline, I enjoyed it overall. The opening is fantastic, it got a little slow in the middle during the confrontation between the couple - maybe some different dialogue, some more facts handed out in the dialogue would have helped alleviate that. The compressed file I watched had poor sound quality, but I could imagine through some of that. Overall, I think the editing was my favorite part of it, and the end worked like it should have.

From the writer:

"So one day Eric discovers while relaxing in the tub (same tub his gf killed herself in) that he can somehow manipulate what he perceives as time. He thinks he can go back in time and review the events of the night his gf killed herself. Eric is not really going back in time, he is more or less going deeper and deeper into his own memory and replaying the events in his own mind. When he goes underwater he enters an extreme form of relaxation and meditation, thus his entrance into his own memories. Sadly the amount of time Eric can stay within this memory is affected by the amount of time he can stay underwater, which at first is not very long. Eric builds a contraption that forces him to stay underwater, and in turn stay in his memory longer. He learns to stay under longer and longer, with the aid of increasingly heavier amounts of weight. Eventually he loads the device with more weight than he himself weighs, and stays back for the entire event. However, being pinned and going so far into his own mind, Eric looses track of his own conciousness in the tub. He slowly starts to drown."
