Drama Fest Prizes

In case you have not think about it.

If this time one person means one vote, we might end up with a final voting with very similar results. All entries will have more or less the same votes.
I will explain:
most or at least many votes will come from participants in the film fest. Therefore they will vote for themselves.
Therefore the only "valid" votes are those going to be from the people external to the films that is going to vote.
And how big is this number going to be? 10? 20?

Lets hope that this group has a bit more integrity than that. From the individuals that I have gotten to know here, none would be so self indulgent to just vote for themselves unless they really (and I mean REALLY) felt that they were the best. In most cases, I find that they are more critical of their own work than they are of others, being unfair in the opposite direction.

I do understand your concern of a small delta based upon the model that you have described. Certainly a post voting analysis would reveal if your assumption was true of not. I for one expect that the best film will reveal itself and be fairly obvious to most.

If anyone votes for their own, substandard film instead of someone else's better film -- that's lame and poor sportsmanship. And cheating; it would mean that the film with the biggest crew wins. As Kevin said, someone should only vote for their own film if, in their opinion and under Jack Bauer's torture they can certify, that theirs is absolutely better than all the others.

If there were only 10 or 20 unique votes, that would reflect very poorly on the festival as a whole. Why do we do this, of only 10 people out of the 20,000+ members are going to bother to vote?

Part of the reason for changing to the only-vote-for-the-best system is to increase the number of participants who will vote. The old system was very laborious and probably prevented a lot of people from registering a vote. With this new system it's infinitely easier for someone to register their vote.

Of course, we could solve Macgregor's issue by just saying "filmmakers are not allowed to vote for their own film." Maybe that's something that Barry_S and Jarred would want to consider.

I´ve seen so many shortfilms winning just because the director whose got more friends get more votes. A pity.

for horror fest you were not allowed to vote for your own film
but this only extened to the primary filmmaker
crew could vote for whatever they wanted

and mac ... when no one here knew you from Adam you garnered the highest score and largest point spread in DVXuser history, a record which still stands

The old system certainly was more laborous, but in many ways was more fair to the films that didn't get viewed as much as some of the others. For example, there could be a last minute entry that's not been able to build up a buzz with the discussion thread, and perhaps that thread even continues to get overlooked by other users, so they don't see the raves that are being stated in it, etc.

So while that film could have been the best, but only seen by a handfull of people compared to another film that was really hyped up ... if the hyped up film wasn't compared to this unknown film, it may receive more votes even though side by side it clearly wasn't as good.

Boy, I just confused myself, but hopefully that made sense.

Now, as a Devil's Advocate against myself .... a lot of this festival teaches some real life skills about marketing, how to grab people's attention/expectations, etc. ... and just like in real life, sometimes the better film doesn't win, simply because it was little known, or couldn't compete against some studio's marketing blitz, etc.

Anyway ....

I'm not sure making a rule that a director/producer/crew person can't vote for their own film, because the kind of person that would have done so (whether their film is any good or not), is also likely the same kind of person that would just as soon withhold their vote altogether rather than give it to another film that may beat theirs.

So, we may as well give this way a shot & see how it works out. :)

I didn't see that here.. last fest I think the top three where well the top three.. they where not all my top three(#1 was though) but I could not argue with the results.. I really like this community cuz mostly everyone seems to be pretty fair and very helpful... my 2 pennies

Which is why we put in the 100-post limit, is to keep people from recruiting friends and stuffing the ballot box.

In some ways we gotta remember that this is a community, and we should treat each other with respect. In one of the prior festivals we had one guy give his own film 10's in every category, and gave every other film 1's in every category. Got himself disqualified and banned. That kind of creep we don't need.

I actually think I like the "you can't vote for your own film" rule, even if you think it's the best. It puts responsibility on all the entrants to reward quality, rather than greedily grab prizes. I don't set the rules for the fest, but I think that if I did, that's a change I'd make. I think that'd help keep the focus on what the fest should be (a celebration and exhibition of our membership's talent as well as a gentle push to get them to make more films).

That's actually an excellent point. The fest is supposed to be about inspiring us all to actually go make something, and to get feedback and whatnot. To learn and to grow. Prizes were added to bring additional value but they certainly shouldn't be the centerpoint. And if someone learns more about filmmaking (even if it's that hype sells or whatever) then we're coming close to accomplishing our mission.

Er...That's pretty much how every such contest works all the way up to the Oscars.

Sup bro,

Nice cinematography, I saw your posts on the 35mm adapter. Was this shot with your vibrating snod35mm design?

I'd have to second that. The Oscar's are pretty much won by the studio's that have the best marketing campaign and sales pitch.

Although this year looks to be promising.

Sweet! Nice looking customization there Tom....wish I had a winning entry :crybaby:

Good luck to everyone who entered, this looks to be a fantastic prize  ... especially since the mission statement of the fests is just to get people making films, the prizes are just an added bonus.

Thanks for the picture Tom

Very cool. These fest are all about the experience and growth, but I sure would like to have one of those rigs. :)
