Envision & RebeccaD Present "Where Silence Falls"

K, I've left a message. Going to jump in the shower now & then just drive straight out there ... even if he's not in the office yet I'll be able to get onto the Mac & check it myself ... if they're there, I'll hopefully be back within couple hours to begin putting them all on the PC and CC'ing the sequence.

On a different note, does anyone have a guess of how bad a project that originated as interlaced (only because of how it was uploaded to the Mac) will fair vs. if it were the more crisp progressive look? I've done a test render with the low res/timecode image I've been working sound to, and it looks actually pretty good, though you can tell it used to be interlaced ... just HOPING folks will see past that & focus more on story, acting, camera/framing/focus, lighting, editing, etc.

Simply because there is nothing I can do about the interlaced/24P issue at this point ... very soon, but not today.

Norm, I can't answer your question but I wouldn't dwell on it. The story is what is most important followed by acting and camera work (at least for me).

Just get it done and be happy with your work. (But I am very sorry to hear of all the f'n trouble you have had to go through in post. It shouldn't be that way!)

Have a great and productive day.

Thanks for the positive wishes, Ted, much appreciated.

On my way to Hazel Dell today (where the Mac/FCP is), I called Dan & was able to stop him from continuing what he was doing, which was burning the incorrect amount of files and/or the wrong files to my DVD's I had left there ... I hate waste. Once I got there I was able to determine that the PNG Image sequence did work, and all files seemed to be there (10,787 total frames at 29.97 FPS, 6 minute total film). Spent the next 45+ minutes organizing them into folders of 2,500 frames each, and then burned them to 5 different DVD's.

I'm back at my office now & have tested a section of the sequence ... it works!! Although the frame size/aspect ratio is WAY out of whack (had to take the master motion control for the track & stretch it wide for it to match the low rez ratio), everything appeared to sync up appropriately. I'm now in the process of transferring over all five discs, which are taking about 15 minutes each to copy over. My hard drives are near full capacity because of a stinkin' wedding that's been sitting there forever, half done waiting for some pictures from the client ... so since I can't delete that to make more room, I had to delete my wife's Aruba trip/vacation from last year ... I'll have to go back & rebuild that one from scratch later (another 4+ hours of work - Yipee!).

Anyway, things are looking up at least for getting in a good cut for the festival.

NOTHING is cheap for me right now, Brandon. We've been nailed with 4 years worth of State back taxes we didn't know we had to pay on my wife's home business, as well as needing to pay her B&O taxes for 2006 now ... so we've got money accounted for & spent before we've even collected it yet, lol.

So external HDD's, system upgrades, the crane/jib & wireless Lav's I want, etc. all take a severe back seat for the next couple of months. It's all good, just have to make due with what I have for a bit.

Ah man, really sorry to hear that Norm :( Didn't know that.

LOL, it's cool. Not like I'm having to stand in the cheese line to pick up my USDA grade block 'o cheese & loaf of bread. But, you'll learn one day that when you have a family to take care of, all of the gadget/tech stuff that you may be more readily able to buy now will have a whole new light shed on it when you're faced with diverting funds from family or other responsibilities into the 'toys' we all love & want.

Between my wife & I, we actually make pretty good income, etc. ... just got hit with some major tax bills we weren't counting on, as well as still trying to pay off all her surgery bills from last year.

Totally understand... I am enjoying my time now :) But long for a family one day... (that sure was DRAMAtic!)

Yeah 'Long for a family' has a nice dramatic ring to it ... right up there with 'yearn for a wife', etc., lol.

Man, oh man! I cannot believe all of the effort you are having to do to get this film ready. What again was the cause of this headache? I will have to remember to avoid doing whatever it is that you did!

WOW!

How was that for timing? Brandon opened that door for me and my post plopped in right on cue!

Thanks!

(sorry to interrupt the "drama" fest you two had going!) :)

Thanks Ted, but I'm finally feeling good about this ... or at least for the fest submission. It's not the 24P that I want, but think it'll still look pretty good.

What caused the problem is the fact that the original project was set up as 29.97 interlaced (which according to Dan, Ryan helped set this up, so I'll have to find out what happened ... possibly Ryan has his system default to 23.98 progressive on new projects and just assumed Dan's would as well) .... anyway, when the footage imported into the program, it was tagged as 29.97 interlaced.

After today, we'll have to look at seeing how we can clean up THAT mess, as well as finish titles, credits, etc., which will extend the film to 7-8 minutes. Also want to find some good bloopers, etc. so that I can have a nice little blooper reel for the cast/crew on their DVD, in addition the film and BTS.

10 minutes remaining on copying disc #4, then I'll throw in disc #5 & take my wife out to lunch for a bit before jumping on a conference call for my day job!

Wow... Norm... seems like you're having some issues with this thing. I'm so sorry to hear that! But you'll be OK.

As far as back taxes and all that, just keep your head up and realize it will all be over soon... :)

Yeah the taxes have taken a back seat today to this festival. I decided to pay the 5% late penalty by just taking care of them (for 2006 tax year) during the month of February (today was the deadline for no penalty), just because it shouldn't be too much, and that small fee would be worth my sanity considering all this other stuff to deal with.

I'll try to post some grabs tonight, but let me tell you .... although the PNG image sequence accomplished what I was hoping with regards to getting an image file to work with that didn't have the timecode burned into it, it introduced a whole other set of issues:

Some of the shots are grainy, while others aren't ... no idea why this is, and it's certainly not this way in the raw footage ... just something in the PNG compression/output, I assume.

Along with that, I also had my butt handed to me when it came time for color correction. What a headache. Rebecca & her husband got to come by & see the before & after ... the BEFORE of the PNG made us look like orange Umpa Loompas ... trying to fight the CC in that is probably the most challenging thing I've had to work with. GOOD CC is truly an art in itself ... while I can do a fair job, it's by far not my greatest strength. I know once we fix the issue on the Mac, we can CC from there & it'll be a whole different look (better).

I also just looked at the festival rules, and it surprisingly doesn't say anything about 23.98/24P, like it has in the past, so I'm going to just render this out as a 29.97 file. The downside is that I'll have to go with lower resolution because the file will naturally be larger with more frames packed into it vs. the 23.98, BUT it should retain a better quality look not having to convert it to something other than it already is.

Test render seemed fine, but I forgot to add the film title, so I'll have to render it again after adding title. Wish I could put all of our cast names, etc. in there but that'll probably have to be saved for the extended cut (extended, meaning opening titles, and ending credits).

Oh man, Norm... wow... what a week for you.

AND TODAY of all days... was the deadline for your tax problem!

Geez, man.... I hope you can relax and unwind soon. If not, I need to! I'm exhausted just hearing all of this!
