how many pixels in SD 16:9 ?

How many pixels does the HVX have in 16:9 SD mode?

And maybe a dumb question, but the HVX can perform 24p in SD mode, right?

Are you asking about the output pixels? For SD (DV25 and DVCPro50), that's 720x480 for NTSC, 720x576 for PAL -- the same as for any other SD camera.

Yes, you can do 24p in SD with NTSC models of the camera.

I guess i meant resolution? How much sharper is it than other cameras in SD 16:9?

sorry im bad with tech stuff

Since the resolution is the same for all SD cameras, the only difference will be in the internal processing and edge enhancement. The HVX generally applies very little edge enhancement, but you can change that through the scene file settings -- those settings work in all recording modes, not just HD.

One big advantage that the HVX has is that it can shoot DVCPro50, which has twice the color sampling information of normal DV cameras. If you shoot that for a SD project, and possibly turn up the detail setting in the scene file, you'll get output that is unmatched by any DV camera.

Ok again forgive me for asking what are probably obvious questions: But how does the HVX differ from the DVX in SD output then? Purely in colour quality? I would have thought that the tru 16:9 chip on the HVX meant a sharper picture?

How can the output be the same if they are different shapes? 4:3 and 16:9

Despite both being recorded in squeezed 720x480, the HVX200 does in fact put out a sharper 16x9 image thanks to it's true 16x9 chip.

Does that mean a DVX with an anamorphic adapter will have a better 16:9 picture than a HVX in SD mode?

DVX100 has actually less than 720x(480 or 576) pixels in its sensor, picture gets uprezzed slightly before tape (most DV cameras do the same). In 16:9 this is even worse, as some 3xx pixels get uprezzed to standard vertical resolution, 480 or 576.

In 16:9 pixels are not square, but rectangular. The only difference on tape is that 16:9 are flagged as such on the clips.

With HVX200 the sensor is "oversharp" for SD, and the signal gets downrezzed for SD. This actually gives the maximum possible SD resolution, better than any SD camera with SD resolution (or less) sensors.

DVX100 with anamorfic is close to HXV, but not quite. And the anamorphic adaptor adds optical problems (no zoom thru, color fringing etc)

oh that sounds good. But can the DVCPRO50 option record to DV tape?
No, unfortunately DVCPro50 can only be recorded to P2 media or a DTE recorder / NLE. It's still a SD format though, and if you are producing DVDs, an excellent choice.
