My take on the fishing reel FF

This thing took an initial breakdown of a cheap fishing reel and a 6+ month later wrapping up of the details. It was worth the wail for me. LOL.. With age comes a certain amount of patience.

Ingredients cheap micro fishing reel, belts and gears from a scraped mail folding machine, square aluminum tubing, some sheet metal and experience working as a jeweler for 25 years doing fabrication(for the case for the small gears and belt). Also a 4"square piece of white plexiglass from a "Signs Now" shop, various other odds and ends and a lot of elbow grease.

It works great and saved myself a chunk of change! May not be industry standard gear ratios and such but does the job!

"i didnt even know they made micro fishing reels"

Yes, they even make electric reels as well. With the first fisher man FF that put together I used a cheap 10.00 reel from walmart. I started to play with the electric reel, but nothing yet. I then started to look into RC race car motors and remotes for an electrical smoother turn, this is the way to go. The only thing is you'll need to fabricate a 90 angle box to hold the shafts and gears in place. Nice job

Hey what is the part number or the model for the Micro Fishing reel - I think I am going to have to get one...walmart right?

yeah, what IS the number? i'm due for a walmart trip anyway and a smaller reel would mean less chiselign and hacking away on my end. In the closeup shots of my FF the poor thing is just cannibalized by chisels

Thanks for comments, I'll try to take more pics with it off the rods and more light.

The reel was purchased at Walmart. I looked at the one I still have and it's a "Zebco 00 micro" but the copyright is from 1996. I've had them a while. You should be able to find something similar though.

dont think i'm getting there tonight. I'm cleaning up some "red-tip" (of the gun) frames tonight and i just reached frame #50.

only 270 more to go...

let me know if they have em... think imstuck here all night

I love the look of the white plexiglass, RSFilm, I am going to have to find some of that...it looks very pro.

There has to be another source for the plexiglass signs. I am going to try the $ dollar store as well, you never know...

what about sign shops? I used to make signs a long long time ago and we'd work with these huge sheets of white plexiglass and sometimes a material called lexan. There were always scraps left over that nobody could use... think I'll swing by the local sign shop here (the chain after) and see what i can dig up. maybe i won't have to go dumpster diving in their trash cans if they're nice enough to me....

The white plexiglass I got from "Signs Now" (sign making franchise). The guy was going to charge $5.00 for a 4"x4" piece but when he brought it to the counter he said he cut it from a piece of scrap and gave it to me!

i hope the dude at the store here is as nice and not a complete bastard. you come across them on occasion.. maybe i'll get my girlfriend to go and ask him... a little cleavage for the cause never hurt anyone

Ok, update.
At the Cdn Walmart, they carry Zebco, but not the Micro '00' series - saw a 202 and a 303, but nothing else. Sucks. Puck, you will have to check the USA and see if they do.
I was thinking about CD cases for the plexiglass, but I think it isn't smooth. I think I will go and check out sign store tomorrow and see what they hold in the back - maybe scraps like RSfilm got.

i tried the cd cases, but while smooth enough, they're way too flimsy.
I'll check here for the micro and let you know what the situation is.

Ok, thanks. I picked up a pillbox that is circular- going to try that considering it is already cut to size and round. LEt me know about Walmart when you can.

Excellent, the round pillbox works with a dry-erase pen - comes right off. That takes care of that. If CLD or Puck are interested, I will grab a few from the dollar store and send them in the mail. I will take some pic of the ff tomorrow when I finish tapping holes in the coupling.
