Can The Hvx Capture An Actors Soul?

I'm sorry but the anti actor turn of this thread is a bit laughable.
But... the entire thread is laughable!

A so called director who doesn't like actors is the equivalent of a painter repulsed by his brushes or water color. Can't work with actors = lousy director and if you don't respect them you can't work with them.
Amen. A-men.

But, most professional actors are great and they are willing to expose themselves emotionally in a way that most of us would not dare. Too embarrasing. Lets give the good folks who do this, in the indy world for no money, a break shall we?
Amen again! Without actors, you got nothin'. Might as well go into painting or still life photography. Or silent stop-motion.

that a very stupid argument. lol.

He just saying that because whenever he watches film he get more "moved" on
the inside as opposed to HD.

some of that is just the "depth of field" that makes feel more focused on the actor
and what not

ask him if the camera they used to shoot star wars captured the actors soul at all.

that wasn't film

Even though the thread has turned a bit more serious, this is probably not the one to make this point and I have been having a laugh as well (are you having a laugh? "extras" reference) but I have felt more than once here it needed to be made. It's a forest from the trees thing with this goof ball who said this "soul" comment and actors in general.

I am friends with a few talented people (playwrights and filmmakers) who don't like actors and it always seems a bit odd to me. I think its to their detriment. One thing for sure, actors are not idiots.

I was on my first HVX-based shoot as an actor just last weekend, and am horrified to report that upon returning home I realized that my soul was gone! I first became aware of it as I listened to Aretha Franklin sing "Think" on the radio and suddenly couldn't understand what all the fuss about her ever was. This was just the beginning. Later, as I watched some James Brown concert footage on TV, he just looked silly. That was when I started to get really worried. I mean, we're talking about the Queen and the Godfather of Soul here!

Then I read this thread and I was like...oh my God!!!

So I called the producer and asked if he knew anything about the HVX200 and "accidental soul harvesting" or whatever we're going to call it. He actually laughed! But it sounded like kind of an evil laugh...you know? My concerns began to take on a greater urgency...

Then...THANK GOD...he called me back and told me he'd found my soul safe and sound in a folder on his Powerbook named "PSI" (Panasonic Soul Import). He said he hadn't been aware that folder even existed, but had since determined that FCP will auto-create it on insertion of a DVCPRO-HD formatted P2 card.

So I can get it back! Whew!!!

The drag is that I'm going to have to get a cardbus slot implanted somewhere near my solar plexus, but it's a small price to pay I think...

Actors beware!

heh heh heh,

Couldn't help but laugh out loud at the actor who made that soul comment. Having worked as an actor and directed plays in LA, I can speak first hand that most actors are just hard working joes that just want to do the best they can in the part.

But, you gotta sift through all the other nicompoop actors out there to get to the good ones!

P.S. I've got the HVX +M2, does this mean I'm getting my soul absorbed with an excellent DOF?

cheers,
JP

Ok...now that I've gotten the comedy out of the way...

I actually was on an HVX-based shoot last weekend as an actor, and it went really well (and yes, I did retain...um..."possession" of myself afterwards... : )

We had an on-set monitor, and the shots looked great even though it was only displaying standard-def (they were shooting in 720/24p). P2 workflow (to powerbook via 2 8GB cards) seemed smooth as silk, and all went welll. As an HVX owner myself, it was very gratifying. I'll post more details when I have a bit more time.

Regarding the original concern the actor had, before attaching ANY meaning or explanation to it, I'd first want to see some of the HVX footage in question versus some 16mm of the same actor where he was satisfied his "soul was captured" properly. My hunch is that the 16mm shoot was probably just done better in ways unrelated to the capture device. The emotion or "soul" of a shot, look-wise, is so drastically affected by better or worse lighting, framing, camera motion etc., that THAT, in my humble opinion, is likely what he's reacting to, not the camera.

My $.02

One last thought regarding actors and intelligence:

Having had considerable experience in several arenas in the arts (graphic art major in college, long career in music and music recording, author of several magazine articles, actor...please pardon what may sound like bragging here...), my observation is that actors in general, and good ones in particular, are generally among the most intelligent of the artists I've encountered, and often the most highly educated as well. In stark contrast to my thus-far primary career demographic, the music business, which is a haven for street-smart, undereducated types (who are often nonetheless astonishingly talented and dedicated), actors are downright eggheads.

Some are rightly accused of being self absorbed, but that's no less common in the other arts, although it manifests itself in different ways. Painters don't generally give a rat's hind parts how they look, but might pout like two year olds if you don't "understand" their "art". Actors probably care too much about how they look...but they have to. Look is at least 50% of what gets you cast. And try picking apart the details in many a young songwriter's work, no matter how wise and experienced you may be... (do this only if you enjoy beating your head against a wall).

I guess that's my $.04...

some good stuff here, but I can't believe this is still going on... LOL
great and unusual thread

Many people don't understand what being an actor is, what you are actually getting paid for, even many of those who hire you
statements like the one by the actor on the first post make it clear that actors don't know crap sometimes either
what's funny is when someone speaks about subjects they do not understand but they try to make it sound like they are an authority on the subject

I for one don't know crap about shut... if I sound like I do it is just my eagerness
apologies where due

Actually, 35mm is required to truly capture the essense of an actor's soul. For reference, see:
Showgirls (1995)

nono youre mistaking "capturing" with Selling........

As far as souls, go, i think Robert is a bad actor if he can only act in front of "certain" cameras. I swear to god i would laugh in hs face if hesomething liek that to me. not to be insensitive, but im an Artsit before a Cinematographer, and i HATE when other artiststalk about capturing souls on canvas etc.... Either the work is good or it isnt, just do the work, what makes you an artist is that you can perform with what you have.

he might be substituting "being experienced" with "capturing soul" and he says that based on his experiences since hasn't worked since back when video wasn't used even in TV... LOL sorry, just had to.... (nothing but a joke)

Being an actor myself.. and knowing a lot of actors... I believe whole heartedly in the statements that you set forth. I also know that actors can be and are somewhat the biggest self-absorbed, vein, and flakiest people on the whole planet. All ya have to see is that Living In Oblivion movie that pokes fun of the director's working relationship with Brad Pitt.

Also.. if you end up listening to most actors... it would seem like they are curing cancer with their acting or salving world hunger. There's also a rather sordid nature to have to act and sell products and things that you may or may not endorse. There's an art and artiface to all of this...

I do like the Hichcock statements.. And I also like the Southpark guys who made Team America because working with actors is really a drag. I also like a George Carlin joke .. and he said..

Actors are like Granola, they are either Fruits, Nuts or Flakes. I am an actor.. love doing it, but know that its a strange lot and laughing and joking at their expense is something fun and should be done more often.

This actor was certainly an ill informed idoit for saying what he did, and probably not an actor anyone here would want to work with.
