getting it to 16x9 in Premiere?

So far I've seen tutorials on getting your MPEG-2 to the proper AR of 16:9 for FCP and Vegas, however, none for Premiere.

Would anyone enlighten us Premiere users on how to make a native 4:3 into a true 16:9 AR?

Submission is tomorrow and I have NO idea how to do it.

Many thanks!

I'm exporting a 4:3 avi file from Premiere, opening it Quicktime Pro, and encoding it (H264) for the upload. QTpro will let me crop the file when setting the dimensions (height and width), so my final product will be 16:9.

I hope this is the right way to do it - it seems to work for me.

good luck!

cool, Jon. here's another question - what about the mpeg for the DVD? do I leave it 4:3 with the letterbox, or can I somehow crop it, too?

thanks, and good luck - although it doesn't look like you guys need much!

That is a good question. In fact that is the very thing we are trying to find out now.

i believe tha the mpg DVD file is required to be 16:9 for upload ..use adobe media encoder and select an NTSC 1.2 pixel aspect ratio (16:9) in the video settings and then switch to the crop panel by the tab in the top left of the panel. enable cropping by clicknig the button in the top left , and then crop 57 px on top and 58 on the bottom. you should also select 16:9 in the crop proportions (center top of window) just to be sure. then switch back to the output view and select the "scale to fit" box in the top left . select your desired encoding settings and away you go. you can use the same cropping method with varied specified output and cropping dimensions to crop and scale for your web video output as well. you may or may not want to change the pixel aspect ratio of your web video pending on what aspect you shot in and what the intended ratio is if it differs from that of the footage or project.

hope this helps.

do please share! :)

What if we can't get our MPEG2 in proper AR by tomorrow's deadline? Not eligible even with a working 16x9 web version?

EDIT: Will try that Neil, thanks!

I will try this today. I also wonder what will happen if we don't upload the DVD file right away . . .
