DVD from DVX footage subpar quality - any good authoring software?

I'm having issues with good DVD quality after authoring footage shot from a DVX100.

I filmed a speech using a DVX100B. Here's what I did.
  • Uploaded the footage via Windows Movie Maker
  • Editted it using Adobe After Effects
  • Output a final version as a DV AVI using a DV Codec (I think Sony)
  • Encoded a DVD with that AVI file using TMPEG DVD Author
The results were subpar. How come when documentaries, TV shows, and movies using the DVX100 are released on DVD the quality is excellent and mine turned out fuzzy and grainy.

My lighting was ample and I know that some studios use better lenses and lighting for their shoots. I just want to know some good quality DVD authoring software that is ideal for bring out the in the DVX (other than Final Cut, I use a PC).

Thanks!

I would guess that part of your problem might be that there isn't an actual editing program to be found in your workflow. While Windows Movie Maker is technically an editing program, it doesn't have much in the way of features; and After Effects, the way I understand, is intended more for use in creating special effects and that sort of thing--Premier is Adobe's editing program. Even an actual editing program as basic as Pinnacle Studio or Sony's Vegas Movie Studio + DVD should give you far better results than the way you did it--I've used Pinnacle Studio on a couple of projects shot on the DVX, and while nobody's going to look at the final DVD's and say they look like a TV show, they're certainly of acceptable quality.

A couple things to check...

1. When you captured in Windows Movie Maker, did you save it out as DV-AVI or something else? Needs to be DV-AVI, but I tend not to trust WMM in any case. There are other dedicated capturing applications you could use.

2. When outputting from After Effects, you have the option of uncompressed AVI, which would guarantee the best quality, provided you have the disk space for it.

3. Settings in TMPGenc can create a huge difference. What settings did you use?

Yes, I saved in DV-AVI mode. I used a DV codec for everything I did. It was only when I pumped out a DVD did I notice a drop in quality.

Yeah, I have an external hard drive, but I just ouput using a DV codec. All my AVI files were good quality, until they went to DVD.

Hmm, all I did was select "DVD for NTSC 16:9" in TMPEG's Wizard....

Then I selected something similar in TMPGEnc...

What I want to know about are better DVD Authoring programs; the best that you guys have come across.
