We shot this 1min short on New Years Eve for Bafta/Orange/BBC 60secondsoffame competition. The film had to use the theme of 'Celebration' & run under 1min.

If you like it please vote for it/comment on it etc.

We shot in an old deserted mansion in the english coutryside

Stock lense, no adapter, 3 point lighting kit, little CC on exterior night & walking shorts. Magic bullet used to create cine footage look (added grain, vingette, splotches, overcranked, dust, blur, flicker etc etc, so some stills will look degraded from orig quality).

SYNOPSIS: A young woman revisits her old, deserted family home. Reunited with her childhood memories, the house treats her to a wonderful display...

We are hoping for the film to come top 5 in it's region, then it'll be shown on BBC tv and a public vote will decide a winner.

Any comments welcome.

cheers.

Hi James.

Really terrific. It a real accomplishment to tell an entire story in under a minute. Congratulations!

I particularly liked the editing for the "childhood" sequences, I've tried to get that look myself, and it's a fine balance. Great work. Any tips you have on how you did it would be appreciated.

Again congrats!

Peter

Thanks Peter

for the flashback sequence i shot at a higher shutter speed of about 1/500 and sped it up about 20% in post. Then using Magic Bullet i added a 'warm' look suite preset and tweaked that, added misfire effects such as the ones i mentioned in original post, flicker at 70%, oversaturate a bit, dust particles & spotches, keyframe a blur & white levels up and down.

it came out ok but could have been better. i was going for the 'Amelie' look if u cast your mind back to the credits where she is a little girl

I'm sure other people know of better ways to replicate this home cine type look, i'd love to know.....

Ok fella's

'Flicker' is shortlisted on Bafta's sixtysecondsoffame website. There are 5 films left.

The votings live as of tonight. It will be shown on BBC Spotlight one evening this week. Anyone in Southwest England keep your eyes peeled and spread the word.

I'm not sure of the exact type of lighting kit it was. 2 spot laps and a bigger flood with diffusion screen in front of it. I also used this 1000W lamp which i think is meant for stills photography to light the exterior house shots at night. Sorry i don't really know much about lighting, i just used trial and error with what we had until it looked about right in the monitor.

you might get a better idea about the lighting from some of these production photos

Took about 5 days to edit off & on, we shot the day before NYE.

bTW, the house is actually totally empty so we had to redecorate the room to make it looked lived in for the party shots.

No audio was recorded at all, which made setting up and shooting so much easier. Did all foley effects and sound in post.

Thanks for your comments and remember to vote for me, voting closes next monday.

Sorry to bring this up again people but i've got some good news...

We have won the regional competition & i'm going to the BAFTAS on SUNDAY! (11th feb) w00t.

Thanks to anyone here who voted.

On sunday afternoon there will be an open screening in Covent Garden for the 15 regional finalists and a Bafta Jury will pick an overall winning film. That film will then feature in the BBC's LIVE TELEVISION COVERAGE OF THE BAFTAS!!!

I doubt we'll win but i'm just giving you a heads up to look out for the film. Also if your about London on Sunday then come to the screening. The live coverage of the Baftas starts at 9PM GMT on BBC1 so watch from home if your from the UK, there is also a live webcast on the Bafta site i do believe for you yankies.

I'll be back Monday night to give the low-down on how it went. That's if i'm not too destroyed at the AFTER PARTY!!!!

cheers.
