ILLEGAL Director's Screening Jan 28th in LA

Everyone

A couple of details on the microMatteBox (recapping from previous posts, so nothing too new here if you've been following progress):

It is a configurable, multi-stage wide-angle mattebox. 4x4, rotating, and 4x5 stages. Ability to take 4 flags (top, bot, left, right). We are shooting for a base configuration of around $500. You will have to see it to truly appreciate what you get for your money. Hopefully those that attend will give some additional perspective on this post-Sunday.

We plan on a two-camera shoot for the commentary portion, and yes, we are aiming for a video podcast of that portion.

And if that isn't enough, we have a DVD (SD-only, sorry :( ) of ILLEGAL with director/DP commentary we will be giving away (one per customer please) at the showing as well.

Just trying to spread the knowledge :)

Wait, the Matte box isn't out so the DVD has nothing to do with that...
So you are giving an "ILLEGAL" DVD to everyone attending? (say yes, plz)

Brian,
Are you going to be selling any of you products at the Screening. I'm interested in a Follow Focus? (cash only I assume?)
Thanks,
Luis

I guess I'm the first one to report... because i have no life.

The place was packed.

Movie was good, looked great up on the screen.

The really cool thing Brian Valente showed was the RedRock MattBox and the Remote Focus for the M2 Adapter... very cool stuff.

I wanted to see this, but we didn't wrap until about 3:00 today. Looking forward to hearing about it.

Couldn't make it out. Could someone give a detailed report on the short? Not just visual, but all around?

hey Kholi,
the short was great. It was about 22mins. shot with the Panasonic HVX and the RedrockMicro M2 35mm adapter. at 720pn on 2 4gb P2 cards. The director, DP, CamOP, One Actor and a 1st Assistant CamOp were there. The visual aspects of the film were great, the story was compeling. (dealing with immigration and illegals in the country) The editing was great even though we learned after the Q&A that they were forced to edit in this way due to lack of having enough shots (due to time constraints.) It seems that this was the director's first short with sag actors and more than one actor. In my opinion he did a great job.
Brian Valente and Jaime (don't know his last name) from Redrockmicro were there. They pretty much ran the show and taped the Q&A. I believe they will podcast it later.
they were also showing off for the first time their new Matte Box. (pretty sweet.) I don't know the price exactly but will be around $500. and for that it kicks ass. Definetly you cannot get something this good for less. If you are looking for a matte box. Check this one out.
Then next big thing was their remote Follow Focus. WOW. for around $500 also (don't quote me on this one and I'm sure price hasn't been determined) you can follow focus from a remote location. NOTHING comes close to this price range. The cheapes solution I'm aware of is 4k. So One item to definetly look into. (I must admit I was drooling)
So Thank you so much to Jargon Entertainment and Sean Buck for allowing us to use the facilities, to Redrockmicro for setting it up and running the show and to Andrew Oh for letting us see this. (congratulations to everyone that worked on the film) Good luck on the Festival Circuit.

The guys from Redrock don't kid around. They helped showcase a gorgeous film. Congrats
to all of the guys from Ilegal on a supendous project. And then the guys from Redrock blew
our socks off with the unvailing of their Matte box! Super sweet deal $500 for three stages
and a french flag and it takes 4 x 5s! (also 4 x 4 rotating) But that wasn't all! Without warning
they unvailed another product that many of us would have loved to have in many past
projects! A $500 remote follow focus! Super sweet!
So I thought I'd take a few with my phone and post them for u guys till the podcast is up and
running. They had two DVXs taping the whole thing so you'll get the whole experience!

Q&A (Cam Op, DP, Actor, Director)

New Redrock SOLUTIONS (products that will blow ur mind!)

Remote follow focus will controll more than one motor making it able to
controll your focus and iris/zoom (I think it might be able to do all three)
but they are still developing it. It will be speed sensitive so it won't be
like the HVX motors that have only three speeds (pls don't quote me)
They will release the details themselves soon I hope. Has anyone checked
out their site?

Thanks, Siniarch. Glad you threw in a tid-bit about what the story covered. That's what I'm interested in at the moment.

Anyone else have any feedback on the short? Can I buy a DVD any time soon?

Re: the Micro MatteBox, the white MatteBox you see in the photos (that's me next to it, playing with the Remote Follow Focus) is the prototype... the finished one will be BLACK.
They also said you can add as many filter stages to it as you want,
but the basic mattebox will come with three stages, two fixed and one rotating.

Kudos to the 'Illegal' filmmakers! I got to talk with Andrew for awhile - great guy! And many thanks to Redrock (Brian & Jamie) and Jargon (Sean) for putting this on. Some great new Redrock products being demoed!

Also, it was nice seeing the usual suspects from the LA HVX User Group there. :)

As much of a technophile as I am, and often being sequestered to the camera department, the screening really got me amped to actually set my sights on writing something to direct for a change...

Thanks to all you guys for sharing a great project.

Grrr. Okay now I really want to see it. DVD order page please!!!

It was great to meet you all and thank you for the kind words and encouragement.

Coming away from the screening I felt proud to be a part of the project and absolutely ecstatic about the $500 WIRELESS FOLLOW FOCUS! Not $5,000, $500!! It also has 3 motor ports allowing the control of not only focus but iris as well as zoom!

A big thank you to Brian, Sean and James for putting together such a great event and sharing your time with us, would love to do it again soon!
