Can The Hvx Capture An Actors Soul?

I just met an actor by the name of Robert Amico. He say's the problem with HD is that it doesn't capture an actors soul. He told me he's worked with the HVX, and that super 16 is way better for this reason.

Now I've heard a lot of arguments on both sides, but never one quite this abstract and intangible.

I'm a proud HVX owner and I was defending the HVX until he threw this at me. I let him win the argument because I didn't know how to respond at this point.

Is it possible that the HVX can't capture an actors soul? (whatever that means)

The only way the HVX can capture an Actor's soul is by having an SDI Jackpack. Soul Data Input.

You can get one from B+S Photo (Body and Soul) for a decent price. I mean it is TRUE that Super 16 can imprint the soul right onto the film, but I find with digital I can see all of the souls flaws clearly. Thus, giving me an insight to what the soul has been through over the course of it's years.

Never point an HVX with an SDI Jackpack at a child: it's just way too early to get anything good.

You just have to enable it in the settings menu.

One Actor's soul takes up too much space. I only get twetny seconds of soul on an 8gig card. Totally unusable for real-world soul capturing situations.

Adam Wilt has an article discussing capturing an Actor's soul with the HVX.

Sounds like his "soul" wouldn't even take up 1mb on one of my p2 cards. :violent5:

Doesn't matter which soul it is, though. It's still being recorded in DVSoulPro HD. Takes up the same amount of space.

That's why you're better off just capturing the actor's image, instead of their soul.

To add to my original post:

Part of his argument was that there was something in the sound the film camera makes or in some flickering light that awakens something deep within an actors soul.

Of course the HVX doesn't have this ability.

Just don't bother capturing his soul at 1080p—most souls are 720p at most.

That's true. A lot of souls in LA seem to be uprezzed to 1080p through some kind of voodoo, but claim to be TRUE 1080. It's a shame what soul manufacturers get away with these days.

Yes it does. See: What's that clunking noise? in Barry Green's HVX book.

Actually, 35mm is required to truly capture the essense of an actor's soul. For reference, see:
Showgirls (1995)

I just read this on a Consumer Products Safety Commission's press release:

"Due to the fact that the new Panasonic AG-HVX200 has the undocumented ability to capture the souls of those individuals being filmed, this product is not recommended for use in any situation in which the loss of one's soul is considered undesirable. While this product has been evaluated and found to be reasonably safe for the operator, it's soul-capturing ability is clearly detrimental to bystanders. Due to the potential auxiliary uses of this technology, the Department of Homeland Security has placed export and transportation restrictions on this device."

Yeah, back in 1995. Now, with camera's like RED on the horizon, capturing Souls is possible with the same Caliber as 35mm film.

My biggest problem with the HVX's soul capturing is the BANDING issue between light and dark areas of the soul. Some people mistake this for white noise, but it's just another limitation of the 1/3" chip.

I have a feeling Steven Spielberg was behind this Homeland fiasco. Always down on the prospect of Digital Soul Capturing.

I once used the soul setting on the HVX to do a self monologue and ended up with a band aid on the back of my head.

The HVX then jumped off the tripod danced like James Brown and sang "I Feel Good"

I got new souls for my wife. Two of them. About the cost of an HVX each. She used to be SD but now she's full HD 1080. So far, however, she won't let me capture them with the HVX.

Cameras don't capture actors' souls.

This guy does:

I don't see anyone, Barry. Is this one of those things where I have to record my Laptop's soul to see the image that my laptop sees? Where's my HVX...
