The Used HVX Market

Sure it depends on what comes with it. With a free 8gig coming with a new one, running at about what... 4700 now? Granted you'd have to WAIT for that free 8gig but still. I wouldn't expect more than 4200 - 4500 for a mint one with 8gigs of p2 space ( 1 8gig or 2 4gigs ).

If that. Or at least until the 8gig offer is up in March, and then who knows what cam manufacturers might've released.

Cool - I'm thinking about selling mine when the Red guys call my number up - Part of me just wants to keep it as a B-Camera since I already invested $6800 into the camera with 1 4GB and 1 8GB cards - Camera really dropped in price since its debut

More than that, Robert. Once you piece it all together. Lenses, hard-drive, etc. At the same time, if you can afford it, it's doing away with this very same problem that RGD is experiencing: Obsolescense. Once you've got a camera that can shoot 4k, the investments then on lead to upping the post flow to handle 2k, then 4k. But, you're not looking to buy another camera to keep up with the times.

RGD - By the time the RED hits, camera's going to be cheaper. Sell now or right after March if you want to maximize the return on your investment. That's what I'd say.

The people purchasing them can afford to go into debt. They'll bring themselves out of the hole just by shooting with it and getting paid to do it. Some will rent them out. I'm sure some people have already sold off their cameras and are renting, others have just saved up or have plenty o'credit to delve into the venture. Ah, and I saw a handful of people doing joint ownership on it, which is pretty smart.

Check out www.indierentals.com -- they're already gearing up to rent their RED out and I bet there's a waiting list. The rentals in the first year will probably clean up the cost of the camera.

I just hope the people buying them are the people who can use them effectivly. ITs a MAJOR step up in workflow.

A lot of people purchasing the camera have already stated that they don't plan on jumping into 4k or even 2k immediately. A clean 1080p is what they'll be using, which can probably be cut now. And of course, shooting 4k and archiving, then down-rezzing to 1080p to edit and such.

Then, they'll bump up the post flow maybe a year from release to 2k, then on up to 4k. It's ethical and practical, lowering the initial price of the camera by thousands if you only plan to take advantage of a 1080 frame.

But hey -- www.reduser.net -- it's all there.

I'm just wondering what NAB 07's going to bring aside from a real RED on showcase.

Hmmm.. I wish I could sell my HVX now but I can't sell it not knowing when I will have another camera - I hate being cameraless - it's my paintbrush! I'll just wait until it ships, I may sell, I may not, I know I am going to lose a lot on the investment but the way I see it is, I already paid the camera off with jobs, it's all bonus money now - I love the concept of the RED because of little things like the ability to do sensor upgrades in the future if you desire that - Brilliant - I'll never need to buy another camera again.. :) I'm saving money right now for the RED, I'm not close to my target but I'm not far either, luckily I landed a pretty good gig a couple of weeks ago, if I stick it out, I'll be able to blow all my money come summertime..

Why do you think the price of the hVX will drop after March? Because of the intro of the 16GB cards? If that's the case, I will sell off my p2 cards today and sell a barebones HVX next summer -

I don't think the HVX price will drop because of 16gig cards. I was saying that you just MIGHT have a chance of selling it for more when the Pana 8gig rebate/offer ends. Who knows what they'll kick out after that.

And that's one of the kickers with RED. You won't have to do this camera juggling anymore. Sheesh.

Credit card, business lease, cash, whatever it takes. Buying the RED is a business investment (or should be; I'd think someone should be either really rich, or bonkers, to buy a $17,500 camera for a personal hobbyist tool; that's new-car pricing!) But as a business tool it should pay for itself relatively quickly. If you can't pay the RED off in its first three months, you're probably doing something wrong. Many of us paid off our HVXs in the first month (or even the first job). Like RGD said, it's all gravy now, anything you can get from selling it later would just be more gravy. Going camera-less for four months or more would certainly not be the way I'd advise; if you're using the camera to get work you should be able to make thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars between now and when the RED actually arrives.

What Kholi is saying, I believe, is that when the rebate period ends (if it's not extended again) then that would be like an effective price increase for a new HVX. So perhaps used HVXs could go up in price a bit. I don't know whether that would happen; once Jan put a rebate on the DVX it stayed and stayed, and has only gotten larger over the course of time. I think the free P2 card is a brilliant idea as it gets new owners exposed to the tapeless recording system; if I was to call the shots on this one, I'd never discontinue that promotion! If they need to cut back, I say cut back to a 4GB card, but keep giving one out to make sure that every user experiences it.

Twas exactly what I was saying, on both accounts. The Benadryl is typing, at the moment. And, now that I think about it, the DVX rebates HAVE only gotten better over time. Refund, book, etc. So, maybe that won't be the case.

yeah i guess so im just looking at it from a 21-year olds perspective. i got a feature this summer and i got 80,000 dollars to sepnd im just trying to see whats should i put it towards.

I'd just like to say that I'm stoked for red, really, really stoked but at the same time I can't see making that kind of investment in a new, unproven company, with a first gen camera. Sure 4k archiving is great but for the 30k you'll spend to get it? I'll wait until the beta version of this camera is out to see if it's for me. I want to hear feedback about real world experience not just about image quality from shootouts. I took the plunge with the HVX200 and preordered. Turns out I made the right choice because I have been 100% happy with the investment and have seen a good deal of financial return from it. I guess I'm just being a wuss about it...

With a great screenplay? Anybody.

With a lousy screenplay? Nobody.

Tarantino got Bruce Willis, Samuel L. Jackson, and John Travolta to work for SCALE. But with a lousy screenplay you'd have to pay Michael Madsen $50,000 per day.

what you mean scale? i have a good story and im almost done with draft four but ill have to keep working on it. basically its a feature film that that spans from 1940- 1970's so i dunno.. how does this work barry.
