ZERO BUDGET MUSIC VIDEO: That's punk rock

Hi all,

I recently directed a music video for STATIC THOUGHT, a newly signed band to hell cat records...

Their concept: (drum roll, please)

A performance piece.

No narrative. No story. No sets. No props. No abstract Imagary. No nothing.

...

Nothing really except for them playing in a room together.... They wanted it to be ZERO budget, zero as in $0.00

Because that's punk rock.

I convinced them to bring in some TV sets that we all had lying around the house just to spice up the background a bit... but that was it.

Anyways, I did what I could, it's up on hell-cat's site and I've been informed it's making it's way to MTV2 and Fuze TV or something. Overall I've seen plenty of "performance piece" videos by rock bands, but I think we managed to keep true to their spirit, so I'm happy with the video.

Check it out, it's the top video on the front page: STATIC THOUGHT, "Drug of my mind"

A production shot of photos I stitched together so I could send my buddy an idea of what it looked like inside their practice space:

This was shot on my HVX connected to a laptop via firewire with a Lacie D2 drive connected to it... Basically I created a mobile station out of some milk crates stacked on top of each other, a board underneath with four wheels, and a surge protector strapped to the crates so I could plug the laptop & Lacie to it.... I used lots and lots of zipties that you can find at Home Depot... here are some pics of the setup (from a different music video)

I'm probably going to get in trouble for that one, if anyone is offended, let me know... sorry in advance but it's just so funny to me...

lowbrow, I know I know.

btw, is anyone entering Spielberg's The Lot competition? Looks cool... it'd be nice to have some DVXuser patrons to go out there and kick some arse.

Great video! however...the guy's voice made me wanna kill myself. You get double respect for having to edit to that music

I smell money somewhere in that website. You should have gotten paid by someone over there-- even if it wasn't the band. It's a good piece, and gives credibility to the label and the band since the production value is so good. They owe you dude.

Hey you did a hell of a job there. Such a little room. But it looks exactly how Punk should look. It is so Sex Pistols it is funny. Great work. Next time you charge them what the first video should have costed. You know how many hours it took to shoot and to edit this. They know you can do it now. So either get paid or let them do it themselves!

actually there was a cost... for food. And seriously, that was it. We shot in their practice space, and all the TVs in the shot were donated.

Although we own all the equipment so I guess you could count $20,000 of camera, lighting, and editing gear....
