WOW! STUNNING Z1 footage!!

we shot a concert with a bunch of Z1u and they ran the HDV footage through something to remove most of the compression and dump it to HDCAM tape... it cost like $2000 but it looked real clean,.. anyone know what thats called? and did they use that prosses on this?

They probably went from component to HD/SDI converter to the HDCAM decks.

No we didn't use that in Tomorrow is Today.

Greetings mr. Lumiere.

I would like to start to wish you happy birthday (as it is now 6th. of Dec. here in Iceland) and to say how impressed I am of what I have seen of your film.

But my question to you is regarding what camera to buy.

I am looking at the Sony HVR-Z1E and wondering if that is the best camera in that price range and if this is the best time to buy it, or is something else (or coming) on the market that would be better.

Best regards

Thank you for the birthday wish. Very much appreciated. And you can call me Frederic.

As far as what camera to buy I'd say it depends on when you need to use it.

If it's today, the Z1U is a great camera but the V1 may outperform it. I have one here and so far so good. It isn't as sensitive in low light though.

Other manufacturers have decent HDV and DVCPRO HD cameras as well.

But the camera is such a small part of your choice. Carefull attention to lighting and sound along with a good script, great casting and a solid crew makes a film in my opinion.

And of course, if you don't have to shoot right away and can afford it, the RED ONE is going to be the way to go for many years to come...

50i to 24p: General System Error

50i to 24p: General System Error

Using Fred's HDV workflow for 50i to 24p, I get great results with the HDV-only material. However, adding jpegs to the timeline and exporting via QT Conversion (10-bit uncompressed; 25 fps; 1920x1080), I get a General Error. There's no indication what that error might be.

Here's what I did:
a. I used the recommended Nattress filters on the video material but did not apply them to the still images nor to the titles in the timeline. I have assumed that because these elements are not interlaced they would not need to go through the same filter process as the video material.

b. Since the jpegs are not 16:9 I have tried setting the "maintain 16:9 aspect ratio" option to "crop" as well as to "letterbox". I am not sure whether this is the best way to deal with non-16:9 elements in the timeline, but if there are better ways I would appreciate knowing.

I have tried various versions of the settings but still get the General Error. I have also ensured that the settings on all video clips and other elements are consistent. Any thoughts on how to overcome this problem would be welcome.

Screening Tonight in Calabasas (Method Fest)

Screening Tonight in Calabasas (Method Fest)

Tomorrow is Today, the feature film starring Scout Taylor-Compton (who also happens to be the new Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's upcoming remake of Halloween) is doing very well.

It recently received a Homegrown Best Feature Film Award from the Garden State Film Festival now totaling 5 awards (see below).

It is also nominated for 5 Slate Awards from the California Independent Film Festival including (Best Picture, Best Cinematography, Best Score, Best Actress & Best Director).

This powerful drama is screening tomorrow evening at this year's Method Fest in Calabasas, CA where the cast and crew will be present.

Named for the "Stanislavski Method' which brought truth and realism to the world of acting, The Method Fest is the only major film festival in the U.S. that pays homage to the actor. The Method Fest is truly The Actor's Film Festival, a festival of Discovery, seeking breakout acting performances of emerging stars and established actors in story-driven independent films.
