Is my plan to buy a camera okay?

Is this plan screwed up?
I plan to order a new DVX100B from Newegg tomorrow.
I have no software for editing/image manipulation.

I plan to buy a new Mac Pro and Final Cut Studio when the new Leopard operating system is available (and after I sell my van to pay for it).
That is still several months away.

My current computer hardware is a PC laptop with Duo core and 1 Gig memory.
Am I totally out of luck or is there some little software application that will give me simple play and ability to maybe burn a DVD?

Ideas?

Gig Harbor, WA

On some thought, I guess my plan is like buying a hammer, nails and lumber, but no saw.

I have a in-shop "how to" project that I'd like to start on.
It will be voice-over through out.
And it seems that I could begin building footage, but couldn't do much with the tape until I get the Mac Pro.
The new operating system for the Mac won't be out until spring.

Does this part make sense. . .or will I be totally frustrated?

You might consider running Edius Broadcast 4 on your PC Laptop and forget about the Mac for now.

Safe Harbor has Edius 4 Broadcast at a great price -- around $850

you can do everything you want with a Imac? and it cost half of what the Mac Pro runs.
I edited my first documentary on a Imac 4 years ago, and the New Imacs are a **** load better then the one I had. Also don't buy from newegg order from Costco same price same rebate but you can return it a year or ten years from now for a full refund if need be. Good luck ps the 17 inch Imac with 2 gigs memory and 500 gig hard drive is under 1700.00 and if you use a student discount that will save you more money online.

Edius 4, avid liquid or adobe - ouch!
Those are all close to $1K with shipping.
That's an expensive patch to hold me over until the Mac comes out.

Imac ? I'll take another look. But my longer range project involves a television series project and possibly sub-contracting editing abilities.
I don't want to be bottlenecked on the computer / software end for a long time.

Costco vs Newegg: Costco charges $300 dollars sales tax.

Newegg: $3200 - $350 rebate = $2850.
Costco: $3500 - $350 rebate = $3150 + $294 sales tax = $3444.

These are current web prices unless I missed something. Did I???

If that's you're longer-term plan, and you don't want to be "bottlenecked," you may be better off looking at Avid (not Liquid), 'coz that's still the industry standard.

But if you're determined to get a Mac, just go to Best Buy and pick up any $90 consumer editing app. Then, shoot 24p standard, not advanced.

Okay thanks, . . .I think that's the advice I'm looking for.
Just some patchwork software to let me save a few clips on my modest laptop until I get the heavy duty machine/application.
24p it is then. . .
