Into the Wilderness for 7 days, just me and a HVX200...Will I survive?

make sure that the shot comes 2nd to safety. Make sure that someone is watching your back and dont forget your GPS

If you're going solo, do yourself a huge favor and get a personal locator beacon.

Should you find yourself in serious trouble, power it up and activate it. Search-and-rescue will get your location in about 15 minutes with an accuracy of about 100 yards. It's good for land or sea and anywhere on Earth. Takes up about the same space as a pair of HVX200 batteries.

I got one from my brother for Christmas.

Dont even think of going solo. Buddy system at ALL times, no matter what.
My usb "on the go" beeps twice if successful and long beep if there was an error. I know thats not verified, but makes me feel a little better.
I use my firestore mostly, but it is great to cut loose and have the flexibility of no cords attached sometimes.
Beacon is a good idea, but costly?

The Emergency is sweet. Hopefully, Breitling puts more effort into the homing feature than they do in the spelling in their ad for it.

I am curious about the script. Are you planning to do a wilderness documentary (animals, different moods of the woods etc) or a documentary about a guy (you) going to the wilds for a week?

If the former, I hope you realise those simple looking documentaries we see on TV are shot with a timespan of YEARS and the use/shoot ratios are normally like 1:100. Not to be discouraging or anything, just realistic.

If you are planning to be in the picture, how are you going to manage that without a tripod?

Man.. that's awesome. I'm thinking of hiking some of the Appalacian(sp) trail this year and this would be great. I could send out for pizza this way...

Good luck on your trip. Are you goint to Ocala National Forest?

Hi There

My only suggestions for gear would be to get a wide-angle adapter lens and ditch the idea the 35mm adapter.

Sarcasm ON: Don't take any homing beacon gizmo with you. The film will play much better after they find your body.. Maybe read Jon Krakauer's 'Into the Wild' to stoke you up. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

In all seriousness, I'd try a weekend in the wild to test out the hardware and yourself.

Good luck

also keep in mind that if you are trying to capture animals in the wild, they are not just going to walk up to you to to be filmed. you are going to have to zoom in extensively, and if you are going to shot this thing handheld, then you'll end up with one shaky documentary

Into the Wild is a great book. Actually all of his books are great. I simply loved that one... read it at the same time that I read into thin air.. which is another fabulous book. I recently read one.. called in Into the woods, I think that's what it's called.. about thru hiking the Appalacian trail...

I also think you should watch Deliverance before hand just to be prepared!.. lol

Very funny!!!!!!!!!! :2vrolijk_08:

Perhaps a better prep movie (given you're in Fl) would be 'Southern Comfort'. Cool movie!

Everyone else has given you good advice on the camera gear.

In case you get in a bad way my friend, bring a GPS locator, a portable strobe light, an extra cell phone battery, a radio, and a .44 mag with at short barrel.

My buddy's sister recently went for a day hike in the sierra mountains and wound up getting pulled out via Rescue chopper after being out in the wilderness for 4 days-- lost a couple of toes in the process. She JUST made it out before death. You may have seen her case on CNN/FOX news in November.

Remember, you only have 1*

Hey there starman, not sure what decision you made on storage. But I give a BIG vote for the P2 store and some fat batteries. The P2 store has never let us down when we're out fishing for a few days in the woods.

As for stabilizers, you're going to get far better results out there with a tripod. I know the XL is shoulder mount, but getting that HVX steady for nice pans and solid shots has been a total ***** for me. Maybe even a mono-pod? At least something.... :)

The pistol is a good idea too. I think you should follow Justyn's advice there. If you come back singing the dueling banjos and had to squeal like a pig....well....you we're warned! hehehehe

Good luck sir, hope you have a great shoot out there!

:)
