2007 Oscar Nominees...

That sucks that the only oscar Scorsese might get is for The Departed (which I loved) which was just an action/suspense movie.

Out of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, and even Gangs of New York (I loved it) he might win for The Departed? Thats saying something about the Academy right there.

It's funny that the award for Best Foreign Picture which has to go to Pan's Labrytnth will actually be better than any of the Best Picture nominees. I liked all the nominess for Best Picture, and I would love if Scorsese finally got a break ( after being robbed i.e. Raging Bull and Taxi Driver ), but they don't hold a candle to Pan's Labrynth.

it won best picture from the Producer's Guild, so it's no surprise it did well in the nominations here. personally, i'm glad to see the Academy has kept up the tradition of honoring a healthy selection of forgettable films. well done!

I just DON'T understand why they ALWAYS do that! :kali:

Pretentiousness. They want to believe they are better than everyone else so they nominate films that the average person has no clue or interest in. Then they can claim to understand the brilliance of it. Personally, give me action, blood, bullets flying and naked chicks. :nads:

Yeah? So what. With Hud, The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke and The Verdict to his credit, Newman wins for The Color of Money?

Rewarding films that successfully explore the human condition is pretentious?
no, apparently it's only a problem if you're serious about it. if it happens accidentally, that's okay. :undecided

The Academy is all politics unfortunately, so I'm curious how this is going to play out. I cannot fathom Scorsese not winning

and because he is due ? No. Because he poo pooing deserves it with The Departed. The Departed is one of the best films I have ever seen and his his best film since Goodfellas; I adore most everything Scorsese touches and love Gangs and The Aviator, but The Departed flat out is a masterpiece of American Filmmaking.

It aint cause he's poo pooing due.

=

Now onto the noms

= Actor is a Lead Role

I'm going to support Forrest Whitaker on this one. His respone to winning The Globe was moving. (Knowing the Academy, they'll give it to Will)

= Actor in a Supporting Role

Mark Wahlberg is hilarious in The Departed; Ill pull for him. He is underrated as an actor I think. (Although Eddie getting it would not piss me off)

= Actress in a Leading Role

That'd be something else if Meryl won yet another one. I always thought she was kind of fugly, but damn, she can act. Everyone seems all over The Queens jock these days however... They always have one film that no one has heard of from The U.K. it seems

= Actress in a Supporting Role

I love Cate Blanchett.

= Animated Film

Who cares. Effin cartoons.

= Art Direction

I'm open.

= Cinematography

The Black Dahlia. Say what you will about the film itself; it is Vilmos's best work since The Deer Hunter, and just as inspiring.

= Costume Design

I don't know

= Directing

Dude. It aint about being due no matter how many times he's been robbed.

= Documentary Short ?

Are you kidding me ? This category always makes me laugh.

= Film Editing

Hmmm. Do you give the award to the editor who has to take Prieto's jumbled mess of montage and hand held schitzoprehnia and lack of structure and Mis-En-Scene or do you go with a more traditional choice ?

I say The Departed.

= Foriegn Langauge Film

Another category I find amusing. Doesn't (Insert Country) have an Award's Show ?

= Make Up

Apacalypto !

= Score

Personally; I found Mark Isham's work on The Black Dahlia hypnotizing.

= Music (song)

I don't know. Save it for the Grammy's

= Best Picture

The Departed; bitches.

I will disown and renounce Hollywood is they screw this one up (again).

= Short FIlm (animated)

Yawn

= Short Film (Live Action)

Strange too think we can make a short film and get acknowledged.

= Sound Editing

Apacalypto

= Sound Mixing

Apacalypto

= Visual Effects

I don't know. It's been a long time since a film 'Wow'd' us with FX.

= Writing Adapted Screenplay

The Departed

= Writing (Original Screenplay)

Letters From Iwo Jima (but it smells like Little Miss Sunshine)

Hahahaha. John, never at a loss for words or opinion...

Personally, I think Helen Mirren is a great actress and her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth is eerie.

I was pleasantly surprised to see The Illusionist here for best cinematography because I loved the look of the film but didn't figure it would be in the mix.

This is the first time in quite awhile that I've seen so few of the nominees. Looks like I've got some catching up to do.

Restricting to things I've seen and I've not seen The Departed, Dreamgirls, or Letters from Iwo Jima to name 3.

Best Picture: Babel

Best Actor: Ryan Gosling - can't freaking believe a guy in a <$1M first feature got nominated

Best Actress: Penelope Cruz was amazing in Volver, but I haven't seen The Queen yet. I'll b fixing that soon.

Supporting Actor: Haley's nomination is mystifying. I thought he was awful. Arkin was great. Haven't seen the others.

Supporting Actress: None of these are grabbing me ... so I'll go with the unknown Japanese actress in Babel.

Directing: I've only seen Babel, but it was shot in 5 languages on 3 continents over more than a year with 1,500 cast and crew. Quite an accomplishment.

Foreign Language Film: Pan's Labyrinth was my favorite film this year. Water was amazing too.

Adapted Screenplay: I'd go with Children of Men based on what I've seen.

Original Screenplay: Pan's Labyrinth by a nose over Babel.

Animated Feature Film: Haven't seen any of them, but I do like cars.

Art Direction: Pans' Labyrinth, baby.

Cinematography: ditto.

No opinion on sound.

Original Score: Loved the music in Babel. Each of the 4 stories had a distinct sound despite using similar instruments. Really, really amazing work.

Documentary Feature: Jesus Camp!

Film Editing: Friend of a friend nominated for United 93 so my fingers are crossed. Of the ones I saw, I'd say Babel.

2006 Documentary Oscar nominees

2006 Documentary Oscar nominees

Ok, I thought I'd start a separate thread for documentary nominations here in the doc section. Overall, I think the nominees are good selections.

Deliver Us From Evil
An Inconvenient Truth
Iraq in Fragments
Jesus Camp
My Country, My Country

I haven't seen My Country, My Country unfortunately, but I think the other four films are highly deserving. I think Dixie Chicks: Shut Up and Sing could have made the list, too, but it was a great year for docs IMO and someone was likely to get snubbed.

I can honestly say that of the four I've seen, I would be happy to see any of them win. Though I really enjoyed An Inconvenient Truth (the only one nominated that I saw twice) and it's success in drawing attention to its subject is undeniable, I personally see it as the weakest film. Yes, it's highly impressive that a power point presentation was transformed into a very compelling film, but I think it is more deserving of a "Best Director in Documentary" honor, which, of course, does not exist in the Oscars. I think it is the frontrunner, however, because it has gotten so much attention in the media throughout the year. As I said, if it wins, I wouldn't be unhappy. Do you think Gore will attend the ceremony?

I just can't decide who I would give the nod to out of the other three films (the stronger films in my opinion.) From a shear story-telling perspective, I would vote for Deliver Us From Evil. For cinematography, inventiveness, and editing I would go with Iraq in Fragments. Also for story-telling and some incredibly memorable and riveting scenes, I would go with Jesus Camp. None of them rise above the others as a whole film, though. As I said, I haven't seen My Country, My Country.

Great year for docs (again!) and a good job in the nominations in my opinion.

Let us just keep it in the same thread ! (Merged) :love4:

SCREENPLAY

I'm on for Del Toro for original screenplay. But it would really be something if Little Miss Sunshine took it home. First writer's credit, guy gets a Nod, and then takes the win? Shiet.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

Children of Men.

...Also, technically this thread should be titled "2006 Oscar Nominees"...
No, the date used is the date aired. It is assumed that the films nominated came out the previous physical year (they are always a year behind...er...ahead)
...no one thinks that the academy time traveled to New Years Day 2008 to screen all the films released between now and then.

But I always hated jerks that point out meaningless stuff like that. :)
you and me both.
you and me both.

The Nominees Shoulda Been IMO:
*APOCALYPTO*
THE DEPARTED
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA
THE PRESTIGE

-and-
Either: THE FOUNTAIN or THE DA VINCI CODE

*Shoulda Won*

Since this wasn't the case, however, I gotta go with Iwo Jima for best picture & Scorsese for best director (earned, not owed)
