HD in Vegas

Use the HDV 1080 template, then change the frame rate to 23.976 and no field order (progressive). You have a couple 1080 templates to choose from; any of them will be fine to start with.

Then, for DVD, do the same -- use the DVD Architect 24p widescreen template.

Thanks...I wish vegas had a 24f preset but as long as it does the same setting manually then it's all good.

Once you set it, save the preset.

Ooh, just want to be clear -- above where I say "do the same" about the DVD Architect preset, I mean that you should use the same advice I gave Jamison -- use the DVDA 24p template as is, no changes.

Thanks for the tip..oh just tried the settings and what a diff compared to the preset 1080i 24p..which doesn't work well with the a1 camera. How is the footage coming out using the 24p architect widescreen settings?

Than what? Than a $300 consumer SD camcorder? Sure. Better than a DigiBeta SD camcorder? No way.

but i thought DVCPROHD was comparable to DigiBeta? and what about Digibeta SX or HDCAM?

is there anything that will build one of those WMVHD dvd's yet? i would love to be able to project somehd without lugging my lap top around......

What you'd do is burn the WMV file to a DVD as data, and there are certain DVD players which will play it -- but I don't recall which ones will. There was one by Bravo a couple of years ago . . .

Nowadays most of the standard dvd players will play files or even music or pictures burnt onto a dvd. But i think you cant have mixed data types on one disk. Meaning as in you can have many wvm files or only pictures. If you mix types. One of them is bound to get ignored and will only show one of the types as a list on your tv. Then you can choose which item to play.

So if I wanted to edit HD footage from an HVX then I need to get Raylight ($195) from DVFilm? You would think that Vegas saying that it's for HD production would handle it without having you blow more dough. Oh well... :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

You would think that, yes. But it doesn't handle HVX footage as-is, it requires a third-party plug-in. EDIUS Broadcast, Avid, Media 100 and FCP all support it as-is; Premiere Pro and Vegas need third-party plug-ins.

Will After Effects 6.5 pro handle it so I can render it as AVI and then edit the footage in Vegas?

This has been covered ad nauseum, but Raylight now supports limited direct MXF framerates into Vegas without AVI conversion. It doesn't support pulldown, so native rates apply for the time being.

They are:

720/24PN
720/25PN
720/30PN
1080i/60 at 30P
1080i/50 at 25P

It SHOULD be higher-quality SD than, say, footage shot on DVC 25, since HD has a better color space, higher resolution and better encoding. Starting with higher quality source footage can yield a better final output.

But a DVD is still MPEG-2 SD.

AH, for the high-def war to end so I can commit my cas-poor behind to a format. I'm rooting for Blu-Ray, but that's me.

Vegas advertises as HD, but needing plug-ins for certain formats isn't a limitation per-se... with the variety of resolutions and recording formats out there, it's not a surprised that Vegas is easier to use with the (Sony Supported) XDCAM format than with MXF files.

It'll all settle down soon--as an industry we're in a huge transition period--change is good, but transition sucks.

DVD is MPEG-2 SD, yes, but you can take advantage of the superior color space and reesolution during editing -- better color-correction, being able to zoom in a long way without sacrificing resolution, etc.. You can do this within an SD project, too.

About editing the HDV footage - What is the best way to convert my .m2t files to .avi for editing in Vegas? The trial of ConnectHD worked well for me, but I can't spend $200. Is there a good file-type in Vegas to use to convert .m2t to something editable, in a short amount of time? I've tried mpeg streamclip and that takes forever. I have Quicktime Pro 7, but I haven't found much use for that.

Thanks.

i know your funds are tight..but after playing with the demo for connect hd ...i'm sold.i have a lot of jittery playback using m2t files thru dvrack hd...and now i am sold to get the 3rd party codec to do the work. i feel i don't want to waste time getting my project out AsAP due to jitter problems. Besides...it worth the lack of a headache farther down the road.

Raylight can also be used for HDV. It has a built-in utlity called DVFilm Maker which can do a high-quality conversion of 60i HDV (.m2t) to 24P Raylight (DVCPROHD AVI). It's slow (4X-10X real time) but the conversion perserves more detail than other methods. See
