Envision & RebeccaD Present "Where Silence Falls"

(NOTE: Modified 'SPECIAL THANKS' section posted on first page ... thanks everyone!)

Yeah, I'm more of a method actor, so if I want to act really cold, I'll allow myself to stand out there without a coat for quite a while (if that's available). :) Rebecca doesn't roll that way apparently.

She was phenomenal, BTW. The very last scene we shot, last take, was absolute money. REALLY looking forward to getting the locked edit to Justin this week & seeing it come together with the score, final CC, etc. Time for me to start working on titles & credits soon as well to get to the editor.

EDIT: Oh, and Reid Phillips also did a dynamite job, and is 'a natural', as he was called so many times while on set by others in the crew. He's been a friend of mine since 1st grade (so that's like 28+ years now), and it's great being able to work with him, especially with how willing & collaborative he is. Thanks, Reid, for letting me connect with a few of those punches (sorry about that!), and for literally throwing yourself into the role so much!

The crew was a TOTAL blast to work with, and there was never a single spat or agenda on set.

  • Dan Ayers, you're the man. Thanks so much for bringing so much value to the production with your Steadicam expertise, eye for a shot, and creative input! I find myself extremely fortunate to have crossed paths with you, and hope you had as much fun out of working together as I did. I'm looking forward to doing TRINITY RIVER with you!
  • Ryan Walters, I was SUPER glad to still be able to work with you, and Dan was impressed with your attitude & work ethics ... you made an excellent 1st AC. Aside from just your technical & creative abilities, I value your friendship. Thank you for your honesty & support in all that we've worked on together to date, and will continue to do going forward.
  • Stefan Scherperel, there is no doubt in my mind that WHERE SILENCE FALLS would not be the film it's going to be without having had you on set. Thanks for your sacrifice of coming down for the weekend, even though you'd already been traveling for a week+ in Vegas for work. Your attention to detail, killer BTS photos, and ability to tactfully & quietly keep us pretty darn close to schedule, is much appreciated! You're also just a quality top notch guy, and fun to have around. I want to work with you again.
  • Steve Waters, you're the definition of a gentleman. Always extremely thoughtful & kind on set, while cranking out great lighting & ready to jump in at a moments notice for an adjustment. You and Dan worked really well together, and it'll show well in the film visually. I laughed when you thanked me after wrap for having you on set ... it's I who needs to thank you for everything that you brought to this production.
  • James Eubank, speaking of working well visually, you were always three steps ahead. Everyone was impressed with your attention to detail and continuity. You bring a great value to any set you're on, and I plan to always work with you. Also thanks for your humor ... love it.
  • Robin Steigmann, thanks for feeding us the great meals, and for constantly being around to make sure the craft services were kept fresh & available. You are what helped to keep us all in good moods! Full bellies make for happy folks ... thanks!
  • Alison Binford, your make up & hair looked INCREDIBLE in the HD footage. I don't believe I could have gotten a better MUA to work with, last minute or not. Thanks for stepping in at the last minute to help us out this weekend, and I will look forward to working with you some more for sure. You were also a blast to have around, as you're a riot to listen to ... funny, funny, funny!
  • Shawn Nelson, you also stepped in at the last minute to help us, and I can't thank you enough. The equipment you brought to the table allowed us to be able to have the Steadicam free & clear of wires, and the redundant audio track idea was brilliant, as we'll have three good mono track levels to choose from, should one be too quite, one too loud, etc. Thank you for your involvement on this short!
  • Jerry Turner, your tech expertise with the computers, as well as your willingness to jump in where ever needed really helped to make things run smoothly. I also believe you & Shawn worked well together, with you as the boom operator, and am looking forward to syncing the sound up with the picture here in the next few days! Thanks for jumping in on this production, with only a week's notice.
Ultimately, the goal of this short was to be a warm-up exercise for the key crew of TRINITY RIVER, our first feature. But in the end, I think we'll also have a great product that we can all be very proud of.

And finally Justin ... you'll be helping to marry all the picture, performance, and sound into one beautiful piece with your score, pushing the emotions to new heights that wouldn't be there otherwise without your involvement. You have no idea how excited I am to get this to you, and to start checking things out next week via internet while I'm in Miami.

So to everyone on WHERE SILENCE FALLS ... :dankk2:

Apology & thanks to RebeccaD

Apology & thanks to RebeccaD

I know she's not expecting or possibly even wanting this, but I wanted to make a public apology to Rebecca: A few posts back I had a small comment stating along the lines of how I know how to 'exploit', simply because she's attractive & has a nice following here on DVXuser.

While meant as something humerous & in jest, it could have come across that I thought less of her acting, was using her only for her looks, etc ... which couldn't be further from the truth. I always want to improve as a filmmaker, and in doing so I need to cast the best talent I can for the roles (with the exception of throwing myself into a short once in a while) ... Rebecca is hands down THE most talented actress I've worked with yet, and I can say without a doubt that she's got more current ability and future potential than 90%+ of the talent that's represented with the local agencies in the Portland, OR area.

She's also the EASIEST & most collaborative I've ever worked with. She brings GREAT feedback & suggestions to the table, but at the end will always defer to the director for the final say, and not fight it in the least if it happened to be different than what she was thinking.

So, that small comment in the prior post was in poor taste, and I've since edited the post. My apologies to you, Rebecca, my very good friend, and to anyone else that may have read it in a way I had not intended.

Thank you, Rebecca, for trusting me enough to try out this film stuff ... which you're now hooked on. :) And thanks to you & your family for becoming some of our closest friends.

You are right, I was not expecting that.... Thank you very much for that warm explanation and the compliments. These are the type of qualities I appreciate in a director and makes me very pleased to have been able to work with Norm. :)

From the performance that I have seen from Rebecca, I suspect that she would do pretty well in the LA market too! Looking forward to seeing your final product. Sounds like it was an enjoyable production to work on.

I believe you're correct, Kevin. Thanks, Brandon, I think this will be the best one yet, despite the fact that I'm in front of the camera on this one too.

For those unaware, I posted another link on the front page, under the BTS post. Our Set Designer/Art Director, James Eubank, was kind enough to take a bunch of BTS pictures for the production as well: http://www.flickr.com/photos/93037288@N00/

Norm did a phenomenal job acting, as well as directing. He is awesome to read off of while acting and he does a fantastic job in his directing role.

Norm.... your film's on the short list of ones I am looking forward to most!

I'll second that. I'm digging the BTS photos (man your camera setup is... well... I can't come up with the words it's that beautiful:D).

How much more shooting do you have to do?

We are done shooting! Two long days this past weekend finished it up. We had a great crew that worked exceptionally well together. So, now on to all the techy speak, etc that I'm not as savvy at yet. :)

Nice! Congrats guys.

Thanks, Jeremy. Looking forward to yours as well ... LOVE the banner with the mysteriously out of focus background.

Working on the BTS montage video now.

Norm!

Hey man, everything's looking real good for your short. I'm impressed! I'm looking forward to watching this one.

I do have one question for you. Since you both directed this one as well as had a part, what do you think about doing both roles for the same thing? I've had people recommend that I not direct and act in the same project, but wanted your opinion on the subject.

Take care... :)

Tommy, I can't speak for Norm, but I know trying to act and direct was a challenge. For a short, I think it is feasible, but to try and do a full feature would be quite a daunting task.

I think you're right. I'm in the pre-planning stage for a feature that I want to film in about 8 months or so. I'm definitely going to have the main role, but I don't think directing it would be such a great idea...

Hey Shawn, patience. :) I could have had just the montage to show, but was stuck on a decision between two of Justin's songs he said I could use (A BETTER PLACE and/or ABOVE). One was nearly 6 minutes, the other just shy of 3 ... one felt too long to simply see montage footage, the other a little short, especially since I had gotten down to 8-9 minutes of good footage out of about an hour.

Sooooo, to make it a little more interesting I filmed myself with some commentary stuff that I'm cutting into it now. I may have it done tonight, but more likely it'll be sometime tomorrow.

Right now I'm more nervous about the rough cut of the film, as I've not heard from Dan yet & I'm wanting to have the locked edit to Justin by this Friday night.

Tommy, good question you had & Rebecca pretty much nailed it. As far as I'm concerned, if I'm doing a short I'd like to be in front of the camera as well ... they're great little excercises to try acting out on. However for a feature, especially when there's investor money on the line, I won't dare try to perform a role in addition to directing, unless it's some bit part.

A few shorts back I had tried acting & directing the same time & swore I wouldn't do it again ... but I've also had a few more things of both acting or directing since (seperately), so I felt up to the challenge in this. Honestly, could I have done a better job in either one if I only focused on it & not both? Most likely, but I dont think either suffered too much this time around. I'm excited to see how the footage turned out, as well as how it'll do in the festival.

Having a great crew like I did on this, as well as exceptional talent (Rebecca & Reid), just made it all that much easier for me to do both.

I believe it's our best film yet.

Interesting... Yeah, I would want to give either the best performance or the best direction at the same time. I'm sure I'm better off finding someone to direct this thing. Besides, after shooting "Maliboo", I learned one thing... I don't want really want to be a director. It's funny... the whole time I was directing, I was wishing more than anything that I had one of the lead parts... :)

I can't wait to see both of your projects. Sounds like a really cool idea that you guys have come up with...

Jiminy Christmas, why can't I do anything simple?! I started out thinking I'd just quickly throw together a montage of BTS material, and it's quickly turning into a production of it's own. I've got to admit, however, I think everyone will be impressed with the opening of the BTS, some of the feel, etc. ... most of which (of course) is largely due to Justin's incredible music.

Okay, back to banging away at the keyboard & mouse here to get it together ...

HAHA! I just used Justin's music in a little demo piece for an article write-up on a handheld device for the DVX... hope Jarred gets that up soon :)
