UKP - an Ignatius Fischer motion picture

Hello, everyone.

UKP will be my first entry in a Dvxuser film festival; I haunt these boards more often than not, but I don't know anyone personally. I've found great technical information here and am looking forward to seeing the other films.

I wrote the screenplay for UKP in December and we shot the project over the course of one evening (quickest shoot I've ever been on). I hope it will be a fun flick to watch. One of my goals is to create a product that will carry the audience from cut to cut right to the end - which may sound like a giant "Duh!", but to me it's the difference between successful storytelling and not.

My crew consisted of the most dedicated individual I've ever met in the indy film scene, Derek Nickell (a.k.a. Baynewerkz), a guy I would have at my back every time I shoot.

Steve "The Tooth" Spiker captured sound for us, serving as boom op, sound tech, and final mixer. Robert Eldon of Quiet Harbor Studios lent us his Oktava, a single gesture of generosity that instantly boosted our production value.

Ivan Borntrager and Mary Volpe-Dawson - no, I can't give out their contact information (they're mine, all mine ...) - to these actors I owe pretty much everything; specifically, I owe them a product they can show other people.

And, of course, I couldn't have done anything without the support of my wife and daughter, without whom I would be a little less than nothing today.

Thanks for reading, see you February 1st.

Welcome to the fest!

I like your poster design, are those digital stills or from the film itself? They look really nice.

Awesome awesome choice of poster design. I love how the top is very cool hued and the bottom is warmer.

Does UKP stand for something that I'm totally oblivious to, or is it something we'll need to see the film to understand?

Looking forward to seeing it.

The images are slightly color enhanced frames from the footage.

I'm glad you guys like the poster. JaronE - dude, I didn't know you were on here! Yes, the warm/cool is definitely intentional.

UKP ... a few people affiliated with the production do know what it stands for, so it is not random lettering, but I don't think it's possible to *guess* it.

Bayne,

Ha! I was wondering what a 'soggy couch drop' was? My imagination went to the toilet until I realized that you meant 'cough drop'.

ignatius,
I saw your reel a while back and thought it was great so I can't wait to see what you and your crew do for this one.

I just checked out your reel, very nicely done, lots of great shots in there! What are you shooting UKP with? DVX or HVX, any mods or adapters?

Hi Jeremy, thank you. Yours was one of the first threads I checked out in the Dramafest forum and your poster kinda made me think about giving this one a shot. I'm looking foward to watching At The Park.

Hi Geoff, thank you too, I'm glad you dug the reel.

We shot UKP with a stock DVX B in 24pa and in-camera Squeeze mode. I took a few days to determine what format I was going to use, and had the contest requirements allowed for it, I would have shot 4:3 and cropped to 16:9 or 2.35 (my personal favorite, but one I'm growing out of using on SD footage). Since the parameters specified an "anamorphic print", so to speak, I did tests with the in-camera sqeeze vs. an FCP stretch vs. a Photoshop stretch. I asked Will Stewart, who shot The Men Who Fell with an anamorphic adapter, what his opinion was on the adapter vs. in-camera squeeze and he thought the squeeze was only slightly softer than the image the Panasonic adapter gives. That made me confident enough to try it and I'm now glad Dramafest had such a requirement.
