Here are some shots I filmed at Lake Merrit in Oakland. Check out the slow mo. Everything is 720pn 24p 60 frames., except the last scene, which is at 24p 12 frames. I loved the amazing clarity of these pictures. This is some awesome stuff. I couldn't believe I caught the action of the bird! Check it out! 74MB compressed to a 720x480 frame size. For some reason the Sorenson encoding lightened the image a little, so the actual footage had a richer colors.

I hope this doesn't sound too critical, but exactly what makes the footage so amazing?

some of the shots were a little hot, i liked the slow-mo tho, the water beading off the bird looked neat

Yeah, some were hot. I was running and gunning before a wedding and this was outside the chapel. The amazing bit is the bird catching the stuff. :-)

Now I'm sold

Dear Matt, this is exactly what I was waiting for. I've read a lot of reviews and watched shots of the HVX, with people complaining how the camera was soft!
Your little experiment clearly shows that this is not the case!
No doubt the variable frame rate adds quality to the mix.
Therefore I'm sold, and go buy the little baby.
Please share the settings you used, and explain how you were focusing. It appears that many people, including some that participated to the comparative test shoot-out were having problems in reaching the detail you got.

Thanks

Piero

Thanks Piero.:cheesy:
I had an IndieSnap Matte box on to reduce flare and a UV Filter on stock HVX200. Okay now for the settings. I white balanced to the light outside and black balanced by holding down the white balance button as well.

720p 24pn
Black Press Gamma
Norm Matrix
Auto Knee
Color Temp-1
Master Pedestal -5
Detail +3
Detail Coring 0
V Detail 0
Film Mode
180 Shutter
(first ND Filter switched on) (Fstop of about 4 - 4.8)
All other settings were either 0 or what they were set to by the camera when I changed into 1280x720p.

If I am forgetting any, please let me know and I will clarify their settings.

I had the camera on a tripod and would see something happening and immediately point the camera, hit record, zoom in, use the focust assist button to jump in and achieve critical focus, then zoom out to the correct framing. I also need to note that I used the LCD to achieve focus. I did not have time to hook my marshall monitor up and I think I did pretty well with the focus. For the city scape I clicked the focus button down to achieve infinity focus which was F95. I hope this helps some people and shows them what this amazing camera can do.

I switched back and forth between the screenshot and the same frame on the clip- major difference in color saturation. The level of detail is amazing, sometimes I'm not sure I'm using the same camera. I am using basically the same settings though. But all the shooting I've done lately has been on heavily overcast days, maybe that's it.
One thing that isn't clear -you say it was all shot at 720pn, but then mention later changing to 1280x720. What part was shot at that rez?

Why does the screenshot have those weird proportions? Is this a screenshot or a picture from a digital camera?

I don't understand why Sorenson is desaturating and brightening my clips. :-( I am trying to fix it, but for now, I hope this one shows the coolness of the camera. The link is down for the moment and I am uploading a WMV that is saturated correctly.

720pn is 1280x720 resolution. I just used both terms to describe the res I was at. I shot at 1280x720pn 24pn slowed to 60fps. Hope that helps! This is the best looking stuff I have shot yet with the camera. I love this camera!

Nice footage, Matt! I really like the shot of the bird coming down to land on the cement.

Thanks! It was fun filming this stuff!

I think marco0782 is talking about the barrel distortion in the first still image. That is quite a bit more than I'm used to seeing, it almost looks like there was a WA lens attached.

That pathway was very curved and I believe you are seeing that in the image and it is giving the illusion of the barrel distortion. What the image shows, is how that shot looked in life. I think you will notice the other parts of the image are not distorted, nor are the following images, pointing to the optical illsuion being the culprit of the supposed distortion.

I was just watching the file I originally poseted that was quicktime versus the one up now. The WMV has SO much more color depth. It looks like it did uncompressed. I wonder why the Sorenson 3 compression lightened the footage so much? Hmmmm. Anyway, this footage has already landed me a gig having someone rent my camera and I for a high end commercial shoot. Nice! Check it out.
