Noise eliminated in HVX

And that was at Cinelike-V. Barry, if you're still around, can you explain why Detail Coring in the original poster's settings has any effect on the image that we see?

I wouldn't think it does, when detail level was at -7. I mean, it might have a tiny tiny effect, but the effect of coring is amplified by the higher the detail level you set; at detail level -7 there's really not anything for coring to do.

I've gone both ways with coring; I think that setting it to -2 can help extract a tiny bit more detail, but if you're running at detail +7 there's no denying that coring smooths out the noise.

For my "maximum low-noise" scene file I set detail level -7 and coring +7 because that's as extreme as I could get it. Even if coring +7 only made a 1% difference in that scenario, I still wanted that one difference, because that package of scene files was labeled "extremes", and I was going for the extreme.

Alright that's what I thought. SO it still does make a miniscule difference. Huh. I'll have to put a sticky-note in the book on that subject.

Right, cinelike-V is a good blend between low noise but still giving some of the filmlike response of cinelike. For ultimate low noise I'd say B.Press is a tad better, but it's close.

I rarely use any of the gamma curves other than cinelike D, cinelike V, and B. Press. For the brightest images HIGH comes in handy sometimes, but for the most part I like and prefer the cinelikes.

If I was shooting a sporting event live, I'd go with HD NORM. For low noise, it's B.Press or Cinelike-V.

Overlook's settings seem to me to mainly depend on crushed blacks - yes that will always lower your noise. I wouldn't run detail at -7 though.
Unfortunately I am still waiting to load his scene so can't comment on the pictures.

Yeah I've tried these settings a bit and one thing to keep inmind is that you won't have much leeway to brighten your image in post because you will get some nasty artifacts in the blacks. Also, I've noticed that when I pan the camera the motion is really jerky, does that make sense?

1/24 shutter is going to have a big impact on how much (or how little) you can move the camera. It allows more light in though.

Which would be the reason for knowing what your final image should look like. Then you can adjust to your post-processing needs. This is more for an in-camera look, I'd suppose. Just as well, the shutter-speed will effect how quickly you can move the camera; that's with any camera when low light source comes into play. Pan slower or the image will fall apart.

Agreed, Antoine. This footage is only a sample/test and it looks as good as some of the lit stuff I see on here. I am very pleased with what I see. SO pleased that I laughed with excitement.

Kholi,

me too...

I work with this camera very often for almost a year, and i think i know no more than 50 % of its capabilities...

Barry,

I agree, i think Cinelike D and V give the most filmlike images even if there is a little more noise.
All i can say is that i have a lot of testing to do after viewing this footage.

Right click with your mouse the address , select download file, when it downloads remove only the x.txt file extension from the file name.

Even your way Mico, I just get a page of wierd text for Strip and nothing for Strip1. It makes me think the files are not longer there. Has anyone else been able to download them recently?

Are you guys right-clicking and downloading? I downloaded the first. Delete the x.txt and played back just fine.

Are the mp4 versions still around? I got the WMV files but they aren't playing well on my mac. They stutter.

mp4's are long gone, they took up too much space on my server so I erased 'em but I kept the WMVs in case anyone wanted to reference them, which I guess turns out to have been handy!
