Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Drama

Well, I was going to jump on here and say that the BEAGLE HAS LANDED, but having seen JDS and his beagle, I don't want to create any confusion!

However, I am home and had a fine day of travel.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Kevin, glad to see you back. How was the convention? The rough cut is looking great. I'll send you something to look at soon.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Larry and Herman, I love movie sound tracks.... thanks for the suggestions!

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Mark, you look a bit like Mary Poppins there on top of Chris' rig. (btw, what did you do before the days of photoshop???)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

John Herman, glad you liked that.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Thanks Brandon! I did!!!

Well, time to put the internet to work for the last leg of this film. We have a lot of post production to do to get this ready for dramafest!

Glad to hear you made it safe and sound...now get to work on that editing

I agree...I listen to movie scores often. Some of my favorites are MEET JOE BLACK and THE VILLAGE. If you don't already, you might want to invest in an XM Satellite radio. There is a channel on there (27) called CINEMAGIC and they play movie soundtraacks 24/7 (except for a show called REEL TIME where they interview directors, composers, writers, etc. Each episode of that show is interviewing a person from a particular movie that either just came out or is coming out very soon. Anyway, the rest of the time it is all movie soundtrack/score. Just thought I'd share.

Now, get back to work!!!!

Hi Ted,

Good to learn that you are back home and didn't encounter any weather related travel issues. The CES in Las Vegas was great. Our exhibit space was a really nice suite on the 29th floor of the Venetian Hotel. We had a million dollar view (about what they charge you to exhibit there!) and despite this being a new venue for our industry segment (High Performance Audio) it went off just fine.

Really looking forward to seeing the rough cut. I know that Mark wants me to work on some ADR next week, so send what you can ASAP so that I can get a feel for what we will need. The frame grabs that I have seen so far look pretty close to what I had in mind for the look of the scenes. Other than getting some of the second unit footage to match I don't think I will have too much to comment on.

I never did find out, who is going to work on the folly?

Anyway glad you are back home and hope that you enjoyed your latest visit to So Cal.

Kevin

Hey Kevin, glad to hear that the convention went well. I've seen that hotel on Modern Marvels, amazing place!

Mark has someone in SF doing the folly.

Thank you again for all of your contributions. I cannot give you enough praise!

HAHA! Thanks for the motivation, boss!!!

No, really.... I want to thank you for the info on that XM station. That sounds like reason enough to get satellite radio!

okay, back to work!

This BTS shot is so far the best that I have seen in terms of showing the lighting setup for this scene. This is really two lighting setups as the scene starts out (in terms of the story line) with a slide show in progress and then later there is a call for "lights up" by the character giving the presentation.

In order for this to work in a continuous master shot I had to come up with a lighting balance that would work without changing the camera's exposure and still look like two different light levels. For the "lights up" gag, I lit the scene with three China Balls (to simulate the overhead fluorescent fixtures) and a 4 bank of 4' Kino with 3200k globes. This gave me the fill level for the second half of the scene that I needed (about a 1/2 stop over the key in the darker part of the scene).

In addition to the "lights up" gag, there was another gag that occurred in the first part of the scene. This is where one of the three pilots runs into the meeting already in progress, opening a door and spilling in daylight. To accomplish this gag, I used a Arri 650 through a small silk and a small flag in a C-Stand that acted like a pivoted door. One of the PAs simply had to rotate the flag and the door opened and spilled in the light just as the character came into the scene.

This location had low ceilings (normal 8' T-Bar construction) so I had to use some gigging to get a few instruments up high for a number of off camera sources. There was a projector that was used as a motivated source to provide the key for the three pilots in the middle of the seating. For this I used a Dedo 150W with 1/2 CTB and some black foil for flags on a 40" arm mounted by a couple of 5/8" pins hung from the T-Bar. The projector was placed in the scene so that it would provide a convincing source and actually supplying the graphic on the portable screen shown in the scene. Getting everything to balance (in terms of color and illumination levels) required a bit of time (this setup took well over three hours to complete).

A number of other Dedo and Arri heads (some with CTB, some without) and a good number of flags and nets were used to balance out the before and after "lights up" illumination levels and color balance.

Hi guys! Tim and I are at the airport and we just reshot the fenceline closeups with Zilgen. Damn, you have no friggin idea how noisy this airport is! At least now we have a serious amount of airport tone to use!

We're going to shoot John (hermn8r) tomorrow morning and Craig Monday a.m.

Tentatively set to ADR David next weekend.

Welcome back, Kevin. I'll coordinate with you and Ted regarding the ADR.

Chris Real is on the way here and we're going to get in his hangar to shoot the background plate for Lacey's entrance, Ted.

good going gentlemen. The work looks good. If only i had a 2 ton Grip truck tooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(jealous, Timur)

Hola buoys and gulls,

Tim and I shot Zilgen at the airport yesterday morning and then we headed East to get some effects plates at our secret desert location. Whoa. Some great stuff on the P2 now! We made it back to civilization and stopped to overnight at Tim's place since we are shooting John this morning at Cable. We're then going to try to grab a new plate for the cemetery scene to try and get a better lighting match than what we have now.

Tim and his buddies made me feel completely welcome. Some of his roomies are in a killer band that played down the road and they rocked (although it is FRIGGIN COLD OUT HERE .....!)

Tomorrow a.m. we'll shoot our third pilot (Craig).

developing .......

Hey everyone. It is 6 degrees out here in Lincoln, Nebraska. -- I wish I were out in California basking in your 48 degree weather!!

Love the updates!!

We saw low 30s in Fullerton the last few evenings and Courtney turns to a Popsicle at anything South of about 65! She wasn't a happy camper at all.

Tim and Mark just stopped by and are headed up to Victorville now. They got their shots today, but I won't steal Mark's thunder...

Mark and Ted have set the bar pretty high with this. With all this build up, it would almost be impossible for it not to be a letdown. But all the clips I've seen so far are fantastic.

Kevin, what a job lighting those scenes. Really inspired.

Mark, I cannot wait to see the fx in this thing.

Ted, I gotta tell you, I'm impressed at how you work with actors. You seem to have a connection to them that gets your message across and it comes out in the performances. Now, quit patting yourself on the back and get a cut together so we can get you some ADR!!!

(and Tim, I'm looking forward to seeing that B-Roll footage you shot!!!)
