Aparently Bexel is renting the HVX + 2 8GB P2 cards for.....$280. Sucks for us HVX owners who are used to getting much more than that.

Yes, it's low but everyone's prices whether it's a service, rental or product need to vary based on your current cash flow and work load. Their price may be reflective of that or it could a loss-leader to get new customers in the door who will be able to experience some other aspect of their business. In the later case, that low price could just be offset as a marketing tool / expense. Maybe they over-stocked for their rental fleet on the HVX and too many are sitting on the shelf? Supply and demand could be it. Initially the cameras were rare, now they're everywhere.

There could be a strategy behind what they are doing or they may have no choice; hard to say.

Is that the book rate? The DC office also offers you 30% off rate card if you establish an account there, making it even lower. (And some people like to haggle for a 3 day week.) I dunno, it seems like a reasonable price to me. If a $100k dolly rents for about $300 a day..shouldn't a $6000 camera rent for less than that? Robstar1's probably right - they may have shelves lined with unrented HVXs. A lot cheaper to keep an inventory of HVXs than the Varicams and Cinealtas.

I was thinking the same thing as Robert. It could be a loss-leader to bring in a new type of customer.

Their list price is 500/day. PMG, other factors go into determining a rental price, other than the purchase price. Most other rental houses in LA are charging at least $300/day for the camera with no cards, and usually more.

You get the HVX in Europe for € 120-150 per day. € 150-200 with a firestore It is aimed against the Sony HDVs and they go for 100. DVX is down at 70. If there would be more rental houses in my area I would only rent. Unfortunately whenever I need a cam it is rented away. So I buy one to be flexible.
You get Digibetacam equipment for under 200 here (Munich for example). So renting out a HVX for 500 is crazy in my eyes.

it is crazy. i've never paid more than $250/day with cards. and on the feature I shot in septmber, I rented 2 HVXs and 6 8gb P2s for 4 weeks for $4000 flat which is effectively a $166.67 daily rate per camera.

That´s what I thought too when I read what dvxuser charge for renting out their HVX...
Even though more expensive to buy, the HVX for most rental houses will still be like a PD170 or DVX.
And I also think prices will come done even more since the HVX is widely available now...

Another European perspective.

Here in Norway they don't differensiate the PD/170/150/ or the other DV/HDV cameras from the HVX.

And it's cheap to rent.

Accesories on the other hand...

JP how much do you charge for your DP rate?
Isn't that where you would make more money?
What about the young kids who come along and work for
peanuts??
Even if they rented cameras for cheap it could not
be so many that would impact you?
If they are always rented then why worry?

Yes.. excellent pricing.... I would charge a lot more for my package in the DFW area since, to the best of my knowledge, prices here have not dropped to that extent.

would anyone here put their HVX on craig' list? how would you make sure you are covered? Insurance? How does it work?

Craig's list is just a means of advertising like any other website or newspaper. it has nothing to do with whether you a covered by insurance or not. That is entirely between the person renting out the camera and the production company or client.
