DVCPRO25 - Any better than miniDV?

Is there and discernable difference between DVCpro25, and DV format? or is it the exact same thing, just with a fancier name?

yeah ive been wondering the same thing.. from what it sounds like its 25mbsec also.. i dont know of the "pro" means anything though.. I found this on Wikipedia.....

"Panasonic specifically created the DVCPRO family for electronic news gathering (ENG) use . It has an even greater track width of 18 micrometres and uses another tape type (Metal Particle instead of Metal Evaporated). Additionally, the tape has a longitudinal analog audio cue track. Audio is only available in the 16 bit/48 kHz variant, there is no EP mode, and DVCPRO always uses 4:1:1 color subsampling (even in PAL mode). Apart from that, standard DVCPRO (also known as DVCPRO25) is otherwise identical to DV at a bitstream level. However, unlike Sony, Panasonic chose to promote its DV variant for professional high-end applications."

So basically is sounds like DVCpro 25 has the same bitrate as DV but uses a different tape?

1. True. There is no difference in the 25Mbps video signal quality among DVCPRO25, DVCAM, or miniDV recording formats.

2. DVCPRO's wider track pitch (DVCPRO's 18 microns vs. miniDV's 10 microns; DVCAM's 15 microns) only yields better mechanical reliability when shuttling/playing tape in a VTR.

3. Metal particle tape has greater coercivity than metal evaporated tape, so, an argument can be made that DVCPRO's recorded signal is more "robust."

Not much difference as far as I know.

The main difference I can think of is in color space in PAL Land. Mini DV is a 4:2:0 codec in PAL land. DVCPRO25 is 4:1:1.

The point of DVCPRO25 was a better tape format more designed to stand up to the rigors of heavy production use, shuttling around in high-speed professional tape decks, etc., and using the more-rugged metal particle tape.

None of that applies to the HVX though.

So there are two reasons when you might want to use DVCPRO25 on an HVX:
1) if you're a PAL shooter and want 4:1:1 color sampling instead of 4:2:0

2) if you're integrating with other DVCPRO25 gear. DVCPRO25 has some flags set in the data stream to identify it as such, and early DVCPRO25 decks wouldn't accept a DV data stream, even though the video/audio portion is identical to DV. So if you were shooting for a news station that uses DVCPRO gear, I'd say put the HVX in DVCPRO mode instead of DV mode.

Excellent thank you. Although, the one news outlet i work for Specifically requests that we DO NOT shoot in DVCpro. lol

They ask for DVcam/DV. so they get DV. bastids.
