Grainy Picture - need advise

Often when I am shooting with our DVX100A,the footage comes back a little grainy.

The gain is on the lowest setting, the there is plenty of light (natural and from a lighting kit). It's not grainy in the sense that one would look at the picture and think that it's tremendously grainy, however on a broadcast monitor it just doesn't look clean. The picture looks like there's digital snow. The colors aren't solid and crisp. Think of it like when you would see moderate compression (beyond that of native DV).

I typically shoot in 30p.

Any suggestions folks?

Tangler,

Have you tried another montor, on other cables? Check that your white balance is correct. I've seen excess grain when I am balanced way cool or way warm. Also, try adding more light to your scene.

If you think there's plenty of light, then maybe you should post some examples of what you're talking about.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I will get back to you tomorrow on some of those replies. M footage is aat work.

The DVX100A is the noiseiest of the line. Try shooting with Detail and V.Detail turned down some, the sharpening makes the noise look worse. The Coring setting is there to help eliminate noise. I believe you turn it up to reduce noise.

Most cameras can't handle extreme dark areas & show grain as a result of noise. Perhaps you can reduce the detail level & V detail level by 1 or 2 values & increase the detail coring, which effectively tries to remove the graininess as a result of noise. Setting the detail level & V detail level too high with over amplify the noise & grain in the picture. But there's a trade-off between sharpness & a less noisy image. The more you increase the detail coring, the softer the image wil be, meaning that the edges in the subject will not appear as sharp as say if you increase both the detail level & V detail level & decrease the detail coring.
