Robert Rodriguez: Genius or a Hack?

I have to ask GageFX, your last few posts have been very confrontational, is there a reason? PM me personally if you want to talk. You don't sound like your usual chill self.

HA HA ha LOL

Just about every post I've read from Gage has some hint of confrontational feel to it. This is his usual self. GageFX in da' house!

He's never confronted me. I think that he may be passionate about his beliefs.

Genius or a Hack ?

How about somewhere in the middle ? Like, a Gack. Or maybe a henius ?

RR totally inspires; he is living the dream. He is making films on his own terms.

Writing, Producing, Directing, Shooting, Scoring, Editing

Wow - A serious dream of mine. And he lives and does his biz in his own town (Austin, TX)

-

Ironically, I think his best work thus far has been Sin City; which is a frame by frame take on Miller's Novel's

RR has not done anything that says Genius; unlike his contemporaries; Tarantino, M Knight, Aronofsky, the Anderson's, Mangold ....

He has not been critically acclaimed. He doesn't seem to have a niche or a trademark or a certain langauge he speaks. He just seems to really love making films

**** it; I say he is a genius anyway. Good for him. I do think we've seen his best stuff; which is fine. A film like Sin City or Once Upon a Time in Mexico is damn good enough.

Shut up. Jerk. lol They'll all see in person at the meet tomorrow. No... Saturday. LOL. (Poor Robert had to listen to me talk for two hours at Hooters on New Years Eve.)

John. Great post and great take. Just one question: You really liked Mexico? I saw it in the theater - hated it, assumed I missed something - bought it, and have tried to watch it again like about 15 times and I cant get through it. It's just unwatchable to me. I need to try again.

I don't like his movies at all but I second John. The middle term is the right place to be there regarding this fellow.

Of everything he's done, it's my second favorite...far behind Sin City. I know this isn't going to be popular but for me From Dusk Till Dawn completely fell apart in the second act and became unwatchable...and it started with such promise.

And regarding genius or hack...those were the two choices but since we've widened a bit, I think of him like a pulp novelist.

I think the first half was far superior to the second, and, of course, obviously Tarantino, but I think the second wasnt that bad. It was good horror fare - good campy horror - but it was outshined by the first. Had the first not existed, I think it would fall under a "Desperado as horror" sorta thing, but the first built up a great story.... that did fall apart. But, again, only because it was so well built up.

I love the Geckos. I want them back.

LOL. Here is the main IMDB user review:

Slow for a while, but then it's non-stop action and thrills to the end

lol.

The Geckos rule !

From Dusk Till Dawn is such fun

Until the Vamps show up. I mean, Salma's dance is one for the ages but once those lame, low ubudget vamps arrive it gets kind of gay

Good insights, all. Every time I read Rebel Without a Crew I think, "Wow, if he could do this with $7,000--spending almost all of it on film--what should I be able to do with my HVX and a couple grand?" He certainly raised the bar. I think before El Mariachi it would not be unfeasable for any half-decent feature film to make in into Sundance (now, he won the Audience Award, which is a much bigger deal), but since RR the bar has been raised for all independent filmmakers because the myth of Hollywood's monopoly has been completely shattered.

It would be interesting to chart the frequency of best picture nominations that were independent films. I wouldn't be surprized if they've spike since 1993. Now, that's not because of RR, but he is a symptom of the changing times.

I dunno... just my two cents.

Maybe Rodriguez is something in the middle. Kinda like Joseph Francis
of Girls Gone Wild fame. You can argue that he peddles smut, but you
simply can't refute the brilliance that is his entrepreneurial mind. He thought
of it and then he did it.

With Rodriguez, he wasn't in the right place at the right time. He created the scenario and circumstance by doing the work. Doing it. I think his films are all as good as mainstream Hollywood's greater body of work. He is up at the Tony Scott level in my mind. Artist? No, but he is a gifted filmmaker and it shows consistently in his films, which are also technically more than sound.

He keeps things gritty and for this I like him, because he could handily have turned out like another Michael Bay with his stunning but emotionally flat mass entertainment.

I guess when you really get down to it, it's the vamps that ruin the whole movie for me. :zombie_smiley:

Yeah, the dance was good.:Drogar-Love(DBG):

Don't be fooled by the $7000. That was almost 15 years ago. And that was not the movie everyone saw. Before it was released and put on video tape (DVD) Columbia Pictures put another $220,000 into it. It was still quite an accomplishment but what made it to the screen was significantly more than $7000.

But that's the beauty! He got all that stuff paid for by others! It goes to show that decent product, with hard work can get you far!

BTW Blaine, I got that thing yesterday and started watching last night with my bro. He was loving it! LOL

Well, that's what everyone is trying to do...get others to pay for your movie. My point was that it's a little disingenuous to point to El Mariachi and say, "Wow, look at what he did on $7000."
