I've been following your progress for quite awhile and just want to say I admire the persistence and dedication to such a large scale project! I really appreciate the ingenuity you guys have exhibited in conquering problems (guns, locations etc.).
-zach- - thanks for your comments. I found out about the sitcom about 7 months after we started...and when i stumbled across it, it had the exact same logo we used to have...i'm talkin identical...twas quite annoying....but yeh we're gunna stick with the name...
as for the thompson i know it looks a bit fake...lol....i had so many plans for it and it was going to be as detailed (well actually more detailed) than the colt....but due to Phil saying "uh I want it now) it didn't get finished to the level I wanted....it also meant it didn't get the protection applied like the colt did...and this took a fair bit of beating in the rain and mud etc....
pia12254 - thanks for your kind words, good to know some people are finally beginning to catch on to all this hoo ha....lol.....
i had a look at yours and it looks like it will be quite good...i only wish that we had a better camera...i'd kill for a HVX or even a DVX...well maybe not kill....but i' do somethin..
as for the effects work hopefully this will break it down a bit.
Program: 3dsmax 8
- particles with motion blur were used for bullet hits with dirt and blood (still being refined)
- tank was aligned and animated
- planes were animated (still trying to get a good method for churning these shots out though)
Program: After effects
- bullet hits were tracked and comped onto the bodies according to how they fell (shoulder moves first......he was shot in the shoulder....)
- the tank was comped in and colour matched so it fit in and then i had to find small sections of grass to place over the tracks and key those in so it helped to sell the fact that theres a tank there (this will be easier to see in the QT version coming in the next few days)
- for a shot like the flak gun firing (its one of my favourites) which began as practically a still I had to isolate the retracting part of the gun, animate it, add several clips of smoke and a large muzzle flash, then with some camera shake it just helped to sell it a bit better....
- muzzle flashes were comped in using stock footage in several layers with a variety of transfer modes and levels of blurring to create the right intensity.....
thats a rough idea...at some stage there'll probly be a small BTS doco on the effects too...
have got a full days filming coming up tomorrow which i will fill you all in about at a later date...but in more important news....coming shortly in the first post of this thread will be the higher res quicktime versions of the two teaser trailers...
i think the QT trailers are working as they should now.....
anyways I got the tape of tuesdays filming today and have gone through it once, from the footage we got I should be able to put together a 10 minute sequence which is in about the 2nd quarter of the film and was one of our big "gaps" that we had to fill....
we had about 20 people out there i think...although only about 12 at most were on camera at a time.....it was good to have a large group...
now theres also been a bit of a hitch that could impact the release date......last year (december and march) i had surgery and the recovery from that has kept me from participating in the filming of this movie for most of the year....
i was almost healed and everything and was due to head off to uni next month....but after an MRI last thursday its been revealed that another thing has popped up and its probably going to require more surgery....so its basically goodbye to uni for another year (i deferred it last year as well) and maybe a few more months of healing to come......
health always comes first but mark my words this movie will be released.....eventually......
i'm buying up a few filmmaking books (on top of the ones i already had and got for christmas) in order to give me something of an 'education' while I wait.....lol maybe somethings trying to tell me i shouldn't go to uni....
Directing: Film Techniques and Aesthetics, Third Edition - Michael Rabiger
- I've read a few good things about this book on this site as well in other reviews and its recently had 30% knocked off the price on Amazon so I thought I'd get it.
Story: Substance, Structure, Style and The Principles of Screenwriting - Robert McKee
- I'd heard many a thing about this man and this book but when I read about Peter Jackson having alot to say about the book and that he'd used McKee's teaching I thought it couldn't hurt.
How to Write a Movie in 21 Days - Viki King
- I'm getting this for the simple fact that I've been told it helps you to get out the first draft really quickly and while it may not be total quality...well..the other books can fix that up....lol
I also have the Dummies books for Filmmaking and Scriptwriting just cos they were cheap and looked to have good info.....
if anyone had other recommendations or comments on these books above that'd be great......
here are some new screens from our filming last tuesday, i put a bit of desaturation and contrast on the clips to test out a final look...it looks okay to me...maybe a bit dark in places....
and check out the new website, link is on the first page
Having just watched 'countdown' I can now see why lol. Intense film mate, really enterntaining. For future reference, may I ask how you aquired your weapons?
^-----------thats Phil our director......just so we all know...lol
and we've finally locked down a schedule to finish filming there are 9 separate filming dates between the 19th of January and the 5th of February.
Then hopefully we can finally say Principal photography is wrapped on "The War at Home"....16 months after pre-production began.
The last few tapes of footage will be delayed in getting to me though as I have my surgery on the 2nd of Feb and will likely be in hospital for about 2-3 weeks after that....so we'll definitely miss our release date...oh well....
i've been informed that over the next few days we will be filming several scenes in several cool locations....
stuff we're playing with:
- an old train bridge and some trains whooshing past...
- a large army tent and a truck from the 1940's
- a rainforest and a large waterfall (the one in the second trailer)
- a green swamp
scenes we are shooting
- parts of the bombings of darwin (train bridge)
- the resolution of our movie
- walking, resting and recovering scenes in the papua new guinea jungle
- the croc attack
- a US checkpoint on PNG
- and a scene on the edge of our 'sniper jungle'
also I was asked on another forum about the battles and such that we are having in the film and i thought i would post it over here as well
'the battles in our movie are this:
dogfight between a japanese zero and Jonathan, one of our heroes - this is done mostly through CG but we have filmed about 20 minutes of various cockpit sequences to be slotted in.
ambush on about 10-12 Australians by the Japanese- we had about 15 extras for this and most of the time the japanese are hidden in the trees with the fire seemingly coming from everywhere....there are a couple of times when the japanese emerge from the jungle but they get killed fairly quickly....
an attack on a bunker on a hill involving a tank - one of our main set pieces is an uphill assault on a japanese bunker which is dealt with in a similar way to the ambush fight in that you don't always see the enemy.....but once in the bunker there are small skirmishes with japanese soldiers and some grenade play.....upon emerging from the bunker there is a short sequence with a tank which we filmed at a separate time and we used a tracked excavator and CG to put the tank in there....
sniper jungle - there's a small one on one 'fight' with a sniper thats coming out as a fairly tense piece it was fairly simple to do....
the bombings of darwin - this is our climax and takes place mostly in the sky as jonathan attempts to defend darwin from the japanese attack. Steven, our other hero is on the ground with a crew at an AA gun and is assisting Jonatahan. This will mostly be with CG but we have several live action plates to put planes and such into....there will also be sequences on the water in the 'harbour' with ships being targetted and such....all in all it'll be pretty hectic but hopefully it can be pulled off....'
well we'd shot a few things during the year last year but our main principal photography has been running since the 15th of November....its being done on weekends and on holidays and days off.....
the blood in the first teaser was done very quickly with a variety of blurred and hand animated red layers in adobe after effects.....the blood for the second trailer were motion blurred particles created using Particle Flow in 3dsmax 8 which where then comped and fiddled with in After effects.
The plane was also animated and rendered within 3dsmax 8.
right....well..... i've been in hospital from the 1st of feb....but i'm now home...a week earlier than expected which is good.....
i arrived home to the news that we have 100% finished filming....and that I'll be receiving the footage shortly.....then comes the mammoth task of finishing this movie asap.....
i'll try and provide some updates as i go along with the post production process....
