HVX/M2 Demo Reel of Past Three Projects as DP

i thought your stuff looked good so i was just wondering what you shot with...also what shutter were you at in the camera? what type of lenses did you use (example Nikon 50mm f1.4...or what?) and why did you not use pl mounted lenses?

235 Studios-
Excellent feedback. I appreciate it very much.

No problem, glad it was taken well. I'm sure that you'll land some great jobs with your reel! :)

one of which we got the Panavision camera package grant for, and are doing a 2K transfer)

Nice! That should be fun as well as a fun experience. It will also be a great addition to your reel I'm sure. If you are able to, it would be great to see some samples from that project. Congrats on the grant!

where did you get the Nikon lenses?

Not sure where he got them, but you can find them on e-bay or at your local camera store- they are all around.

why didn't you use Zeiss super speeds or something like that.

Again, I'm not sure why he made those choices, as I can't read minds- but in general people choose these lenses based on their budget. Nikons run anywhere from $30 each and up, where as the Zeiss lenses start at about $600 each and up. So a lot of people choose the Nikons.

Wow, like everyone has said, you have great shots on there and I love the use of color. I agree with Ryan said about having the strongest images up first. I also thing grouping like shots might be interesting, CU, MCU, and so forth
Looks good.

I'm with 235 with figuring that you're looking for feedback. The reel look great. I've watched it a few times. And there are a few things that jumped out at me the first viewing and really stood out after watching it a few more times.

0:59 to 1:21 - I think you can loss this whole wine on carpet scene. It cut out right when you start to get a glimpse of what's going on. It takes up 22 second of your reel early on and you have stronger stuff on there. I liked the camera move, but not enough to keep it here.

1:21 to 1:42 - I really like these shots with Mist/Fog Guy, but there is a little trimming that could be done and maybe you move these later in the reel. They feel very music video, which is cool, but since this is your narrative reel... If you lost them it wouldn't kill the reel. But I'd try to keep them. My biggest issue is that Mist/Fog Guy shots are spread throughout the reel. I'll revisit.

2:06 to 2:16 - Great framing and lighting, but the forehead / eyebrow facial ticks just pulled me out of it. The first three second of the shot to 2:09 seem to work fine. I don't notice it in any of his other clips.

2:16 to 2:23 - I like these. I think you could flip them and put the boxcar shot first and then have him walking on the tracks away from camera second. I would also move this to the last shot of the reel. I think the walk-away shot is a very cool image and you want to end on something strong just like you want to start.

2:23 to 2:25 - I think you should keep all of the Mist/Fog Guy footage together. But I think you should lose this one all together. The focus is soft and it is similar to the shot at 1:25, which is stronger.

2:38 to 2:54 - Nice look. I would have liked to have seen a few beats more of Spencer stepping out of the Humvee with the truck behind him to see how you composed that. But I liked it.

2:55 to 2:59 - If you have to explain that the shot is not ready ("missing the composited blast"), then the shot is not ready for your reel. Once the VFX are in then this should be somewhere near the top of your reel. Until then take it off, because when they pull your reel off the top of the stack, they won't have or won't remember your explanation.

3:24 to 3:28
- Mist/Fog Guy again. Not sure if you need this one.

3:04 to 3:14 - Slick camera move. Big budget, very polished. I'd move this closer to the front of the reel.

3:14 to 3:18 - I love this shot.

3:29 to 3:39 - This seems to be a lot of people's favorite, so I would think about using it for your opening shot. The only thing that makes me think you put it so far back in your reel is that after the girl comes into focus she stays soft. I'd have it at the front of my director's reel. But since you're a DP, I'm not sure.

Ultimately, we're all here to support each other and I think your reel is very professional. The above comments are what I'd tell my friend if he came to me for my thoughts on how to fine tune an already great presentation. Or better yet, if I were directing a feature and had to convince my producers to go with this DP they were not familiar with, this is what I'd want to do before showing them his reel.

Good job.

wow. great comments. thanks for your time, storm factory. i friggin love this forum.

i went with the nikon lenses because of cost, but I'm buying a PL mount in order to rent cine lenses in the future as an option.

one thing i was worried about when i threw this reel together was pacing and having enough footage to fill it. i found out i had more than enough and had trouble "killing my babies". the next one will be much tighter.

I would disagree with the earlier post about changing the first shot. I like the first shot and believe it really draws you in. I'm not as experienced as some people on this forum but I'm a filmmaker and I'm thinking of hiring him. :)

Anyway, and this is going to be a strange observation. But this reel at times feels *too* pretty to me. I mean the lighting is literally perfect in every shot and maybe it's because I'm used to seeing amateurish lighting on this forum but sometimes the best lighting is imperfect, you know? At least that's the first thing I would ask you about if I hired you. "I love your stuff, but let's be a little less clean here." Anyway, I still believe this is awesome stuff and I'm going to PM you now because I want to get your info.

Best, Chris
