Slow mo and the Firestore

I had a friend tell me that you can't capture slow motion on the Firestore drives, only on the P2 cards. True/false?

Thanks!

Absolutely false. All who continue to perpetuate such rumors deserve to have their HVX's confiscated.

ah,
i was searching the forums in the last couple of hours exactly for this solution...
and this is what i found http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=57319
now i am trying to figure out how this works on a PC. Raylight/raymaker has a remove extraframes option and i guess it does what the FrameRateConverter that was discussed in the link. some one has to correct me here.

thanks

well,
if you look at page 36 of the HVX operating manual
ftp://ftp.panasonic.com/pub/Panasonic/Drivers/PBTS/manuals/OM_AG-HVX200.pdf
though the doc dosent specify anything about fs100 here in this page, you understand the logic behind getting slowmo outof fs100.
for instance, you have shot scenes using the 30P recording format for specifying the playbackframes, you can obtain slow motion effects with the speed halved by setting the recording frame rate to 60fps. Images in the 720P progressive format will create smoothly flowing slow motion sequesnces with a high picture quality

So then is PN some kind of Panasonic only thing, and that's why it's not on the firestore? Or is it a higher data rate, or what?

It is a recording mode created by Panasonic.

The difference between native (PN) and non-native (P, PA or i) recording modes is that native modes do not record duplicate frames in order to maximize the recording capacity of P2 cards. Because native mode doesn't deliver the constant stream of frames mandated by the normal DV protocol, it cannot be transmitted in realtime and therefore isn't output through the DV port by the HVX.

If you want to do VFR using the FS-100 or by capturing directly to a computer, set the HVX to a non-native recording mode, and set the frame rate as usual. Your editor should be able to discern which frames are flagged as duplicates and remove them.

This is what I'm inferring:

I can shoot 60p on a Firestore then slow it down in Final Cut to create slow mo.

True/false? Please treat me like a layman. I know my way around Final Cut but I'm new to the HVX.

Yes. Use the Panasonic Frame Rate Converter plug-in which is on your FCP 5.1 distribution disk in the Extras folder.

Shoot at at any 720 format (except native, since the HVX cannot stream native from firewire).Set your frame rate in the scene file. Shoot at that framerate. Do not remove any pulldown in FCP when you import the file. Apply the FRC (it appears under the tools menu).
