AMPAS Requirements for Shorts

On the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences website their requirements for a Short film submission says

"minimum resolution 1280 by 1024 pixels with pixel bit depth, color primaries and image and sound file formats suitable for existing Digital Cinema sites or the current digital definition approved by the Board of Governors"

Does this mean if I shot my short in 720p that the resolution is below the minimum requirement? If yes, can the images be upconverted to their requirement or if I go HD to 16mm film, will that upconvert it? I'm a bit confused. Can anyone chime in?

Guess what? So is 1080. Basically, no HDV or DVCProHD cameras can meet that requirement if they are serious.

What about going HD to film won't that give an increase in resolution? Also what is the resolution of 16mm or super16?

Is that for stills? 1280 x 1024 is a common size for computer graphics display - not for cinema. I could be way off here, but that is neither HD or 2k resolution standard - it is SXGA if I'm not mistaken. Somebody picked up the In-Focus in the AMPAS boardroom to get that specification - no DC projector mfg. is working to that specification.

VGA - 640 x 480
SVGA - 800 x 600
XGA - 1024 x 768
SXGA - 1280 x 1024
WXGA - 1366 x 768 (panel size almost universally common to entry-level lcd <42" HD monitors)
HD - 1920 x 1080
2k - 2048 x 1080
4k (SXRD standard) - 4096 x 2160

I believe you, I don't believe them. Uh, dude... you realize you're linking to their digital projection specification from 2005? That's like, decades ago in HD [projection technology]. They were likely scan-converting to some stacked Lightning SX projectors or the like for the awards.

Yeah just saw that but I can't find anything else with regards to the requirements for a short. I searched the site inside out and that was all I found pertaining to submitting a short film.
