Some frame grabs from my upcoming short film ILLEGAL - HVX + M2

Wow

Wow

I think the footage looks amazing and I REALLY want to see your film. It's too bad I'm not in LA or NY or else I would definitely be at the screening.

Something that struck me about the trailer though...I got a different vibe from the trailer than from the footage you had posted. It has to do with the music you chose. With the music from the footage, I thought your film was going to be a hard, Tony Scott-type thriller, whereas the music in the actual trailer had me thinking the film would be more of a dramatic piece.

Very nice! Love the CG on that footage. You may have mention ed it before but lets face it.. this thread has gotten huge.. so what did you guys use to color grade?

I too join in line with the mass of other looking forward to seeing this.

Hey Guys,

I'm so sorry for the late response. I've been so busy that it's been hard to hit the forums. We just had a private screening at Warner Brothers and we had it projected in HDCAM 23.98 PSF. It looked amazing!

I've since re-color corrected the film and I'm going to upload clips very soon.

Also, the music from that clip is from Traffic and no, we do not have the rights but we just finished up the actual score for the film with a composer.

We are going to have another screening in the Los Angeles area soon and I'd love whoever's in the area to attend. Brian Valente from Redrock will be there to answer any questions you may have regarding the M2 adapter and we will go through the what we had to do to get the proper look for the film. I'll keep you guys posted on that. Redrock is so amazing. DP's that have seen the new CC'd version swore it was 35. The m2 is that good.

Thanks so much for the kind words guys. It really means a lot!

Also, the actor is an up and coming fellow who's extremely talented. His name is Thomas Blankenship.

I will reiterate what has been said many times on this thread: your footage is superb, some of the best stuff I have seen on this boards, and it is a credit to you and your team's talent, and the capabilities of the HVX200.

It is simply amazing, and that you had a private screening for Warner Brothers gives hope to the rest of us who are trying to get noticed.

I wish you the best with your project -- you deserve it! -- and if ever there's a NY screening, I'd love to attend.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Oh my god a film I shot is actually on here and I didn't know?!? Andrew lol how could you! :violin:

I acted as the camera op. for "Illegal" and used my HVX/M2 rig along with a set of Nikon primes which consisted of;

24mm f2
35mm f1.4
50mm f1.2
85mm f1.4
105mm f1.8

I'm glad that so many of you like the look of the film, I knew we had something special after we got our first shot off. The acting was phenomenal, Andrew (Presario)'s Directing was very focused and seemed to flow perfectly with the actors, and Kenneth Yeung's lighting was hard and definitely conveyed the tone of the film beautifully.

Using the M2 was essential to getting the look of the film I believe, afer getting my M2 from Brian Valente I've used it on 90% of the projects I've worked on and wouldn't honestly want to shoot without it! If anyone has any questions on how I have my M2 setup or lenses/things of that sort, feel free to ask.

Good stuff Andrew!

Noah, the 24mm is a great lens without a doubt. It's perfect for those warped peephole type shots or a wide beauty shot. The minimum focus distance isn't as close as the 35mm if you're looking to get that eyeball shot but it will still give you a mfd of about 1' 1/2 while filling the frame in an extreme close-up.

I have the 35mm f1.4, but was looks for a wider lens as well and the 24mm seemed to be a good choice. Something for that wide beauty shot, like you said. You said its good for that warped peephole look as well as a wide beauty shot. What's the distortion like? I may also get the 105 f1.8 that you have as well. I hear its a great lens. Both of these seem to be much harder to find than the 35, 50, and 85 I got.

The edge distortion on the 24mm is noticeable when wide open, as would be expected. The sweet spot for the 24 seems to be about f5.6, but you'll be hard pressed to find yourself shooting at that stop without a plentifull amount of light or in an exterior situation.

The 105mm is a beautiful lens tailor made for the ultra shallow rack shot or a semi-macro shot.

Man I need a redrock and some lenses and maybe some day I'll give it a try. Love the DOF and great colors... Rock on....

yea my 24mm is a little soft on the corners at full open, but sadly i cant force its iris closed to F4 or F5.6, its a Canon, and its a used lens so the iris switch is kinda broken. but still a sweet lens

Hey Alex,

haha, I don't know how you missed this thread. Great job on the film btw amigo. Can't wait for the reteam.

Hey guys, we are finalizing the screening date and we'll know by early next week. For those that are in or around the Los Angeles/Hollywood area, please come out to see the film and also get a glimpse of what the Redrock M2 adapter looks like blown up on the big screen and projected in HDCAM 1080.

In terms of color correction/look, the first pass was done with Apple FCP's 3 way color corrector. It worked well but I wasn't 100% happy with it. For the second pass, and the way that it is now, I used Magic Bullet 2. I've been a long time user of this product in my Premiere days but never tried it out on FCP. I was very impressed although it doesn't have extensive color correction controls. It's more of a film look plugin. M2 + Magic Bullet are an awesome, unbeatable combo IMO.

I'd be interested in seeing the film. I'd like to be there for the LA premiere for sure.

Hey Brandon,
great! Right now, we're set for the 28th. More details will be posted once it's finalized.

A brief recap on our private screening at Warner Bros. Projected on the big screen with their 4k projector, the Redrock M2 + HVX held up superbly. The DP's and execs that were in attendance swore it was 35mm film. And that really brought a huge smile to my face. But what really made me happy is the fact that these tools helped tell the story the way I wanted to, without compromise.

I'm so grateful for the tools that we have access to as of late - the Redrock M2 and the affordable HVX. 5 years ago, it would have been impossible to think we can get images that look like film for such an affordable price. It's such a great time to be making indie films right now. Good luck to all with your respective films!!!
