Mark and Ted's Excellent Adventure in Drama

Nice to have finally meet you in person Brandon. Ted will be happy to learn that you are patronizing his new favorite local establishment. Good thing you didn't get stuck behind Rob and his plane in the drive thru (its a bit hard for him to make those tight turns in a tail dragger).

Haha! Yeah, I was behind a couple CHP cruisers... just happy they weren't behind ME on the freeway home ;)

Looking forward to tomorrow!

Some BTS still for ya'll...

not really any great WIDE shots Kevin... I don't have a nice wide lens for my camera yet... hopefully Kyle got some wide shots... I do have the individual elements of the lighting setup however....

A few shots showing the individual elements would be fine, but a single one that showed the entire setup would be best. Post whatever you have and I'll take a stab at describing the setups.

Congrats on a good shoot guys.

I await eagerly.

By the way... it was FREAKIN' COLD tonight! I am for sure bringing a thicker jacket for the shoot tomorrow night!

Actually, it was about 15 degrees warmer than I expected. When I left set (about 12:15 AM) it was 51, which for January is a bit above normal. Tonight is going to be a lot colder and we won't be protected at all for the crash scene shots. I would recommend to everyone to bring a number of layers of clothing. Camera op and DP (me) will likely be stuck up on a scissor lift for some extended periods of time, so plan accordingly.

A request to Mark, please take a look at the expendable requirements that I sent in last week. We do need nearly every item that I had on the list (black foil, diffusion, etc.) and we will need more stingers (heavy gage long ones) for tonights second setup.

Another recommendation, this one for crafty, have some warm beverages and something like soup or similar snacks. A film crew, like and army, travels on their stomach.

haha, never seen an a situation warrants the phrase "cute as a bug in a rug" more ...

that, or ...

... it looks like the plant in Little Shop of Horrors is about to finish you off

Wow. I'm not even gonna bother trying to get caught up on the thread right now.

The BTS shots are looking good though.

I'll read back before I ask any questions.

Ted... Glad to be back on the West coast, I'll wager?

looking good gentlemen

i noticed, scrims flags and what looked like a 2K.

Thats the sighns of someone who knows what the hell they are doing. :)

Let me tell you, Kevin did a fantastic job last night... seeing his work "in-person" was a pleasure. I look forward to tonight even more.... speaking of which, Mark, I'll bring some of my 5hr. batteries tonight, so we don't have any close calls in that department ;)

Well, since we don't have a BTS shot that shows the setup yet, I will give a brief description of the instruments we used.

This was a two shot of Eric sitting on a cot and Lacey walking into the scene to deliver some news.

Eric's key was an Arri 650 with a small Chimera and a number of flags to control the spill. I set his key to just under 64 foot candles. We used a Dedo 150W as a hair light on a three riser overhead.

Lacey's key was a 4 bank 4' Kino with 2900k globes. I wanted her a bit warmer than Eric to help set the tone of the scene. She also had a Dedo as a hair light on a three riser. Her key was also just under 64 foot candles.

There were a number of elements in the scene that needed their own lighting instruments. The table in front of Eric had a line of beer bottles that he had set up to visualize an upcoming flight, these were lit with yet another Dedo and a number of flags (there was some very specific shadows needed for these). A forth Dedo was used to provide a source that was motivated by a small practical (old desk lamp with an articulated arm) this was used to provide a foreground spill for the table area with the beer bottles.

A second Arri 650 was used to light some more bottles on the floor around Eric's cot (are you getting the idea that this character does a bit of drinking?).

We had a cheap work light as a practical for the background area of the shot. I placed it so that it would read as the "source" but didn't use any of its output to light the scene. The real source for this was a 400W JokerBug (with full CTO and a single stop silk) a 4' floppy as a big cutter along with a few other flags to control the spill. For the two characters fill, I used a couple more 650s and flagged them as needed.

The number of flags, silks and nets in this setup were pretty amazing. I ended up running out of C-Stands (we had a 2 ton grip truck package, so that was near 20 stands) and had to resort to grip clipping flags to the sides of other flags (not something that I recommend as you can damage them if your are not careful).

This setup took a bit longer to complete than I had planned for due to the fact that we had to work around a set that was in the process of being dressed and I ended up having to make more and more adjustments as the set progressed.

THe bottles on the table must have switched positions at least a dozen times, lol.

And thanks to the guys who graciously stepped in to help empty those beer bottles...kind of took one for the team, you might say.

No kidding. Hey Kevin, I might be looking for a good DP in the next couple of weeks. When you guys wrap? :)

P.S. - I may be planning a trip out to SoCal in Feb, and would love to hang with some of you cats.

Let me know when/if you're heading out for sure, I'd love to meet some more East Coasters. The people I've met so far have been great.

Tim.
