Why the dvx flags letterboxed footage as anamorphic?

Maybe it's a dumb question or it's been discussed before (couldnt find it here though)...

when i shoot with the 'letterbox' setting, playing back the footage on a 16:9 capable tv, or even windows media player on the pc, the player goes automatically into 16:9 mode, as if the footage was anamorphic (which is not, it's a 4:3 letterboxed).

Evidently the dvx flags this footage as anamorphic, which doesnt make sense to me.
also, with premiere, it correctly interprets the footage as DV 4:3 and the project settings are for DV 4:3 output, but the output footage (if no effects were applied, but only cuts) behaves the same way the original one did.

as a turnaroud i've always applied some sort of effect or dummy title over ALL the project to make it 4:3. im sure there's a better way though.

Opinions?

Well, since this issue happens even before the acquisition (even playing back directly on tv), it doesnt appear to be related to hardware/software configuration, but to the dvx only..

It's a DVX100AE.

I had noticed this thing with my old cheap panasonic camcorder as well, and i thought it would be different with the dvx but it wasn't

a little update.
i've noticed that windows movie maker, differently from premiere, will flag its avi dv output footage as 4:3 (even leaving everything untouched).
as im not really fond of WMM, and it won't work for long clips, so im still looking for an alternate solution.

also i was speaking with a friend who has the same issue with a jvc low end camcorder.
