wHOS hAPPY WITH THE firestore! Im not

Firestore cage is on the homepage of www.geardear.com. It's on the left hand side of the page.

Mike... what NLE were you using when you experienced those 2:16 clips? That's due to the fact that the FS-100 has a 2 gig file limit which, guess what-- is about 2:16. FCP 5.1.2 is supposed to span those clips. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. Ben and I suspect a bug in FCP 5.1.2. In other cases, all your footage is there-- it is just that is segmented due to the 2 gig file limit.

I do not suspect a bug in FCP at all. I suspect a bug in OS X, as the same problems pop up in P2 Log and P2 Geine, too.

how long does it take to offload a 100gb FS to you computer. I'm considering having one. And does it record all framerate. If not does it record 24p without problems?
Thanks

My Quad Core off loads faster than my Powerbook. Don't have specifics on that. It's been so long since I meassured it out, I haven't a clue.

It records all the framerates just like a P2 card, except Native modes. But the 3.0 firmware coming out soon will do Native modes, plus QuickTime and QuickTime Native modes.

I'm using FCP 5.1.2 on a MacPro. OSX is up to date. I'm going to investigate this further. There may be a couple of frames missing between some of the 2:16 clips - others - none missing. I'm also going to try trashing preferences - and then I'll mount the FS100 - open the folders and remove the files that transferred properly. I'll leave the others and hope OSX and FCP recognize it as a group of clips to "span".

I'm wondering about the proposed Firestore FS100 3.0 Firmware Upgrade? Will that do away with the 2gb limit or in some other way make it easier for FCP and OSX to recognize clips to be spanned?

No clip spanning in the 3.0 update, but if enough folks let Focus know how important that is, they'll add it. It will do QT files, so there's no more Importing via the P2 Import Window, although I'll use it for clips I need spanned, which must be shot in P2 or P2 Native mode.

Be sure you have the latest FS-100 Firmware update. It does away with pretty much all the FS's bugs. What's left are OS X bugs.

Try opening the bad clips with P2 Log. I'd say P2 Genie but it only recognizes P2 cards, not the FS-100, and I wish they'd change that. I like it way more than P2 Log, performance wise.

Anthony,

When did you guys move to HD? Good to see you here. I'd be VERY interested in seeing your housing with the firestore in it. I've been wondering how to fit the firestore in a case with a camera this size.

Thanks,

-P

I'm working on a project where we're primarily shooting with the HVX underwater in a specially designed housing that has its own external housing for the firestore. It would be hard to imagine more difficult conditions than loading everything on the surface in the Mexican jungle or on a boat and then submerging it for six to ten hours while the unit is scootered through 20,000 feet of underwater cave. We're seeing high humidity, untested conditions with heat build-up underwater, and the general rough conditions of working in difficult environments-- and the Firestore is really holding up much better than I would have ever expected. Only real problem that I've seen was when we used the firestore's battery (instead of running from an external battery in the housing); the heat build-up caused the unit to crash, but I ran the recovery utility on the firestore and was able to salvage all but one shot out of 75 minutes.

Best,

Anthony

We have a 1.67 GHz Powerbook and it takes about 1 minute/gig to offload. Depending upon what you're doing it creates some work flow issues but we integrate shooting on the Firestore with p2 cards. Somehow it works out.

After renting the FS for a while, I bought it now. What I'm curious about is the firmware update (3.0) and where you guys get the 90-degree FW contact. Haven't seen it around here in Norway.

The FW contact on the HVX is a buggy little thing...

Be sure it's "reversed right angle" so that the cable points down from the HVX's FW plug, rather than up. I also got a 1 foot, 3 foot, 6 foot, and 10 foot cables, two of each, just to fit whatever need I may have at the moment. As a musician, and former IT profesional, I also went to the local music store and got some Peavy brand velcro straps. They're made for cable management, and just the right size. The come in packs of 3 or 6 I believe. Very handy to have!
