The War At Home - Australian WW2 Feature

PRESS RELEASE (okay so I just wanted to make it look kinda professional...lol)

MANTRA.IFP & KINGSLAND STUDIOS WELCOME COMPOSER ON BOARD FOR 'THE WAR AT HOME'

06:09PM, 13 December, 2006 - Cundletown, NSW, Australia

After a few weeks of discussion between both myself and Phil Kingsland we have settled on a composer for our film 'The War At Home'. Chris Hurn from New Zealand is to be brought on board in the coming weeks to compose and produce the musical score for our film.

It was Chris who approached us for the opportunity to create the score and after reviewing some of his previous work we were delighted to have him become part of the team.

As principal photography is currently taking place it is likely that proper work on the score will not begin until sometime early next year.

In order to not keep him completely out of work until that time he has agreed to create the music for our second trailer which is due to be released at the end of this year. Early cuts of the trailer are being put together and effects shots for it are starting to be created.

Both Phil and I are very excited about this new addition to our crew as our musical ambitions that we had in mind were going to be cobbled together pre-recorded items. It will be much more satisfying to have a proper score to accompany the picture.

lol....i just got the latest lot of footage and will be posting the entire "fire tunnel" sequence for your viewing shortly.........

thanks guys...glad you enjoyed the vid....but yeh phil has said he is never never never ever doing that again....lol

Along with that footage I also received a second tape that had our scene at the lighthouse in the wind. Now this scene was to involve 2 Americans....and since we don't have any we were forced to get some people to put accents on.

Knowing we would need someone who could slightly act to come close to pulling it off Phil grabbed some drama students from the high school to do the scene.

Well...what dialogue that wasn't destroyed by the excessive winds had frequently changing American accents and pretty bad acting...lol.....although i will admit the acting is sub-par across the board...cos after all we aren't professionals at this....

I'm yet to go through it all so it may be salvagable, but if not it's looking like I might have to do some ADR and make my cameo as the voices of the americans. I can put out a fairly consistent American accent if I work hard enough (well more consistent than these guys...they were moving all over the country within seconds) and I'll have to do some ADR for Phil's lines as well....

never done ADR before, though I have done voice overs for animation....so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.

straight from phil this is rest of the shooting plan as it stands at the moment

well we almost had a disaster today...the camera i'm using to capture things chewed a tape and stopped working.....but it seems to have corrected itself now....so all is well....

our jeep convoy has now expanded to having 4 jeeps....one with a mounted 30 cal machine gun...which is excellent.....

also I will be heading out to the set for the first time all year this coming friday to act as VFX supervisor....i'll be filming scenes which will have a tank inserted into them and also overseeing one of our bigger pyro events.....which is the tanks explosion....its quite ambitious but we've got it all planned.....

i'll be covering that whole afternoon from a behind the scenes perspective as well and will see if i can make another BTS segment about it....should be good

FILMING UPDATE

Jeeps and such
This morning Phil had our small convoy of willy's jeeps, now reduced to 3 due to a last minute cancellatoin, driving round and looking great. Their owners, several 70-odd year old veterans of I think the Korean war were doing the driving. He said at first they were driving around slowly but as the morning went on they sped up and he said he saw the gleam come back in their eyes as they were driving. Quite cool.

Tonight he's going to be filming in a community hall that was built in the 30's and he'll be projecting some WW2 newsreel footage on a screen for a scene. He's also got a 1940's Jag for another scene just after that.

He said he would get me some screens from all this tonight some time so they'll either be put up by me tonight or tomorrow...can't wait to see the jeeps....

apparently the 30 cal on one of the jeeps fired blanks but the owner forgot to bring them....lol....woulda been great....

here we have screens from the jeeps and the newsreel showing stuff....its a bit dark...lol

i may have to do something in post about the modern number plates...lol

FILMING REPORT
for Friday 22nd December

Well I headed out to the set for the first time yesterday to do film the final parts of the bunker sequence including background plates for CG work. But the 'fun' started well before we got there...lol

I was picked up around 4pm and we picked up some supplies and some extra people. After that we headed to a petrol station in order to fill up our little Jerry can so we could do some more burning of things. So Phil gets out and goes to fill up the can but presses the pump to hard and it all shoots up into his face...

Thus he was unable to see and had to be led to the toilets inside. This was done by the other two people in the car and while one was opening the door and another was shooing away people, they forgot about Phil. He walked head first into the door frame, busting his head open. I was about 25 meters away and I heard him hit the door.

So after about 15 minutes of washing the fuel out and the blood off he was okay and we made our way to the set....finally...at about 6pm...lol

We filmed a few short scenes of Conor (the guy usually wearing blue in most of the screens) running about, but he 'had places to be' and was getting quite annoyed so Phil had to take him home. When he got back we set up for our 'big bang' as we called in and organised a body double for Conor.

So eventually we got that lit and caught it on 2 cameras just in case, it was quite good, the sound it made was great, although it wasn't as big as I had originally envisioned, oh well...

We then burnt a few pieces of the bunker and some grass around to make the 'battlefield' look a bit used and filmed a little bit more.

By the time we finished it was about 8:30pm... 2 hours past our planned finishing time...I got home about 9pm rather tired....not sure I'll be doing too many set visits...

I also heard from Phil this morning, last night after he dropped me off he headed into town to the hospital to see if they could do anything for his head. He got 5 stitches and 3 days off work...lol...which he was quite happy about.

TRAILER UPDATE

Originally the plan was to have our full 'theatrical' trailer ready for release on New Years Eve, this was to be about 2.5 minutes long and be scored by Chris Hurn. Due to a few hiccups this probably won't happen until mid January.

Instead I am putting together a second 1.5 minute teaser trailer which will be released on NYE. This is actually being rushed out as we are trying to convince one of our leads to stay on for the last few days of filming as he's being a royal pain in the a**...lol....but not to worry...

so yes...NYE is the day the second teaser will be out....

TRAILER UPDATE

It's all starting to come together and it kicks the crap out of the old teaser...lol....I've got a few CG vfx shots in this one...but they look alot better than the one in Teaser 1...trust me...lol....

its looking as though I will make the NYE deadline so all is well

Hahahaha I wonder what happens on set when you're not there. heh, sounds like a really really interesting place to be

i wonder as well...lol....

if you all watch out in the next hour or so on the first post of this thread the new teaser is going to be posted.....a whole day early...lol...i worked on it all day....

I liked it the only thing I would say is, to make the colors look better and closer to the "Video game footage" I would film closer to sunset or sunrise.

thanks Bsaint, the plane shots weren't video game stuff....i did that in 3d studio max....and they take place at a different time to everything else so its okay that the colours don't match. Plus the majority of the trailer is from our bunker scene in which there is a storm, and it was overcast and raining on the day...

also i think some colour went in the compression and youtubing, i'm fairly surethe colours are better in the QT version.

we've done shoots at times ranging from 4am to 11:30pm...so yeh it really covers alot of time...
