Music Video: you got me running...

Awsome job! I hope to achieve something like that one day. Quick question. You said you color it in camera and tweak in post. Do you mind sharing your settings? Keep it up!

using three way color corrector, bring up the green/skyblue to tint the shadows and, up the yellow in the mid. for the highs, just a lil red/orange.

someone mention about the sky being purple, where?

thx,

The compression is done in vegas 6, i choose quicktime, codec sorenson 3, and bit rate is 125 kps.

the film burn look is actually simple. let see if i can explain it..

lets say u have a clip of someone walking. split that footage into three sections.

one- the approach
two- the walking
three- the end

So you have three shots.

one:the approach, I would keyframe a flash near the end.
two: the walking, I would speed it up by 300, this shot will be only a few frames in ur sequence.
three: the end, i would keyframe a flash in the begining of the clip.

using the artbeats film burn. put the clip over the two clips(where the one and two connect. ) same with the two & three.

go to 1:52 of the video for reference. stay with it til it looks right.

Is this the Average BitRate or the Peak Bitrate? Because I find that my videos look best ubder 100mb @ a avg bitrate of 7,000 when compressed in WMV... I suck :(

The link for the higher quality version only plays the first 10 seconds. The file is only about 6mb. The quality is so much better though! For the flashes you used white flashes and the orange artbeats overlays?

I definitely tried using white flashes but for some reason it looks different.
orange artbeat overlays? I'll look it up...thanks

also, thanks for explaining a couple of things. I definitely wanted to use that flash in some kind of project for a while now...and I actually have a project coming up that is quite similar to yours but in a darker manner and probably weirder lol...er ok nm its nothing like yours. If all goes well, it should be up by Jan.

hmmm...just checked out artbeats. It has some cool stuff up there and what not but right now i dont have that budget. I think I can recreate some of those in AE. then just render out then use them like an artbeat clip i guess...of course it wont be as good but oh well... haha

Hey Hiro,

It's been a while dude. How are ya?

I'm going to jump on the love-boat and say this vid rocks. Technically perfect. Acting solid thru-out. Nice narrative.

When you gonna get an agent Hiro??!! lol

EDIT: Just like the VADEA song, this is sooo catchy... :)

Hats off to you sir, gorgeous video and you really inspiring to see filmmakers using their equipment to full effect.

It's a really beautiful music video -- congrats!

WHere can we see your other videos (your website doesn't make it easy to find)?

That is not only a great song........but wow, you are a very talented artist. I use the term artist becuase not everyone can do what you do. We all have the same brush(dvx100) but it is what you do with the brush that counts.....and man do you know HOW TO "PAINT"

Congrats

thx for the nice comments, props. Im updating the website to make the video more accessible please check it in a few days. thanks-ramon

Ha!- I just noticed at 0:59 you timed the flash/overlay with the 3 snare hits. Thats sick! I've watched it a dozen times and just noticed it. You really did a great job with this. I'd really be interested in getting a bigger/full size of this if at all possible.

OH man thats a gorgeous video. Great job man, and I'm sure everyone here dreams of attaining that quality in their work. Keep it up, and yes this rates as among the best videos i've seen on the site

The slo-mo's were 60i? Dude, I couldn't even tell. They looked awesome. Any other tips for your slo-mo? Great vid BTW.

thx, .. about the slow motion, i shot 60i and the shutter speed was 1/60. slowed down 40%, and i matched the colors to the 24p footage.

Hiro thanks for the information but I got a few more questions if you don't mind. #1 What kind of LCD did you use( brand and speaks)#2 do you use a Macbook laptop #3 do you watch the VID back on a LCD or plasma TV. I will it say again great VID.

Not True!

Not True!

Hiro,

Believe it or not the Jon Fordham Thursday video you watched was shot on the new Sony V1U.... dynamic range baby!

A.Hobbs
I don't know where this rumor started or why it persists, but this is completely untrue. I shot the Thursday music video "At This Velocity" using the Sony F900/3 and Zeiss primes.

I believe the basis for this rumor was the Charles Mahon music video "Bombs".

I shot the music video "Bombs" with the Sony V1 in October of 2006 as part of a demo of the camera prior to its public release. The footage and resultant video was to be used by Sony to promote the V1 camcorder. This was strictly a demo video that I put together for a friend of mine using the V1 so that Sony would have footage to use for promotional purposes, and for me to have the opportunity to test drive the new camera.

The Thursday video "At This Velocity" was a professional music video that was produced by Island / Def Jam Records for MTV, Fuse, and IMF broadcasts. The only connection between these two separate videos is my work as the cinematographer, and their having been shot within a month of each other.

Both videos are available on my website:

artist: Thursday
song: "At This Velocity"
label: Island / Def Jam
camera: Sony HDW-F900/3 HDCAM

artist: Charles Mahon
song: "Bombs"
label: None
camera: Sony HVR-V1U HDV
