Simultaneous Live Recording of 2 cameras

What would be the recommended way to do this?

I would presume firewire would be the way. That said, would some type of firewire "splitter" work? Or, would I be better off getting a 2 port PCMCIA Firewire card, as my expresscard slot is taken up by my editing (and in this case, capture) drives.

How would one go about 2 camera live capture in EDIUS?

Thanks,
Jason

Oh. So there wouldnt' be the capability of dual live capture and using some kind of jogging switcher to make my transitions from cam to cam, etc during capture?

This is going to end up being some expensive studio type set up aye?

So I guess, the "realistic" option for me, would be to timecode sync two cameras, dump the footage, and then multicam in EDIUS.

Thanks Barry, for the info.

If it's a multicam live-on-disc mix you want, then yes that'll take a video mixer, an audio mixer probabaly, some monitors, cables, etc.

The cheapest, and often highest quality option (at least on a budget), is in deed to just roll continously on both cams and then multicam in post - most NLE's have some sort of multicam feature now.

Well this can be done very easy if you have a canopus card.
As an example if you have a storm you can connect 2 cameras on a pyro firewire card and one to the storms input.
Then you should use dvcapture and select start stream together.
Now viola 3 streams of dv to disk.
Very simple.
I think the nx can also do this.

So the person who told you this can't done in edius is right but forgot to mention that it is possible when using canopus dv capture and a canopus card:)

We have 3 recorders connected that way and use them to capture 3 streams without any problems used it with camcorder also.

Thanks for the info srEDIUS. That will be something to look into in the future. Unfortunately, I don't have any hardware board. Just good ole EDIUS 4.

I'll just use the multicam function in EDIUS for now.

Thanks,
Jason

If you are a registered Edius user, you can download an updated version of the DVCapture utility (V1.11, dated 6/27/2006) from the support site which allows simultaneous capture from multiple sources. If works with Canopus editing boards as well as generic OHCI ports.

The program does not currently record DVCPro50/DVCProHD AFAIK, but if you are doing a live multi-camera DV shoot or are trying to ingest alot of DV material from multiple cameras or decks, it is still useful.

Thanks for that info, Thoff. I was unaware of the update. Hopefuly they will add in some dv50 and dv100 support in the future. That would be a great thing for a project I am planning.

Everyone answered already, heh. Yes, for DV/DVCAM input, the DVCapture utility can capture up to 3 streams simultaneously.

For more streams or alternate workflow, you'd be looking at either DTE type devices like FireStore or Catapult, or putting a laptop on each camera (or a tiny laptop-esque machine).

Cool. Thanks Brandon. Any plans in the future that you know of for the DVCapture Utility to include dvcpro support?

You're on late tonight. Merry Christmas to you, by the way.
