Not my experience with the unit. What firmware version is in the units? What NLE are you importing the footate into? How are you importing/archiving the footage?

"acceptable" No such word as "eceptable". I grew up in a family of school teachers.

Have you spoken to Focus tech support before posting here?

I'm pretty well pleased with mine. Cut my post-time considerably, and allows me seamless capture of long form work. My clients like it too.

More specifics of the problem would be helpful. Again, I have had nothing but positive experiences with the FS-100 and the only minor criticism I would offer is its bulk. However, I have been able to mount it to my DVRig Pro and DVMultiRig or, for tripod use, mounted on Zacuto rails using the Geardear cage and "backpack." But file corruption-- not at all.

I am very greatful I have a firestore works perfectly... I think all gear depends on technicalities and if you follow manufacture instructions mostly they will work just fine

I bought one recently and was very pleased with our maiden voyage-- actually more like relieved -- that everything worked well. We ended up renting 2nd one to assist in work flow.

Question for the more experienced fs100 HD users: I'm about to go on the road, lots of travelling, and would be interested in any experienced people had any testimonials of confidence or any quirks to look out for.

I've carried the FS-100 on international flights, checked it in a Pelican case, dropped it (only once), shot run and gun and really have put it through its paces. It hasn't missed a beat. It is very durable and I put my confidence in the unit. Make certain you have the extended battery. This will be even more important once 3.0 comes out and we can record close to 3 hours of 24p on the disk.

As far as the grammatical issues go, many of us have suspected for a long time that David is one of the super-secret scorers of the SAT and GRE essays.

Thanks Ned. Very helpful.
How have you been handling backups while traveling? Out of total fear of losing our data we brought two firewire 500s and double backed up everything. My concern is that for this trip we're going to be shooting a lot more stuff and are looking at an unwieldy number of drives.

I have the Firestore cage from Geardear (www.geardear.com). That provides a great deal of protection for the unit. When limited to one carry-on going through Heathrow twice this summer, I was able to fit the HVX, FS-100 some batteries and a few other items in a carry-on cushioned by a couple of changes of underwear in case BA lost the suitcase. Not exactly elegant, but it worked.

I travel with a 500 Gig FW hard drive in my suitcase, packed snug inside all my dirty laundry. Ok, too much information there. But I use that to off load all my original MXF files. And if you were using P2 cards? Same solution needed.

FS100 has been working great here since August. I have it mounted to the HVX hotshoe using Focus Enhancement's Firestore mounting kit.

I'd like to know from other FireStore users how you either mount your FS100 to the HVX, or carry/mount it somewhere else while shooting hand-held as well as tripod.

>>Ned How heavy is that cageFS100 ?

- John

Cage is very lightweight and I highly recommend it.

I had tested the Focus mount and, while I found the mount sturdy, I am concerned about hanging heavy items from the hotshoe of the HVX. Furthermore, mounted on the hotshoe, the FS-100 fan is clearly audible through the built-in mikes. One of the Zacuto solutions is to use the FS-100 in Focus mount on a Noga arm mounted to the back rails of the Zacuto.

I'm working on a project where we're primarily shooting with the HVX underwater in a specially designed housing that has its own external housing for the firestore. It would be hard to imagine more difficult conditions than loading everything on the surface in the Mexican jungle or on a boat and then submerging it for six to ten hours while the unit is scootered through 20,000 feet of underwater cave. We're seeing high humidity, untested conditions with heat build-up underwater, and the general rough conditions of working in difficult environments-- and the Firestore is really holding up much better than I would have ever expected. Only real problem that I've seen was when we used the firestore's battery (instead of running from an external battery in the housing); the heat build-up caused the unit to crash, but I ran the recovery utility on the firestore and was able to salvage all but one shot out of 75 minutes.

Best,

Anthony

I'm surprised that BA let you on a plane with batteries let alone an unrecognizable black box full of electronics with FIREsomething printed on it's casing. Oh right it was pre liquid hysteria.

Ned, I've seen recommendations for the the cage on other boards as well. Can't seem to find it on the Geardear site .. willing to write it off to brain death .. can you help me out with a more specific link.

thanks.

I dont care for the Firestore... had one die and soured me forever. Also had multiple issue as you have experienced. I much prefer P2 to redundant OTG drives thru a laptop...not faster but I can hand the client a HDD when I am done.

ash =o)

Just worked on a job with a firestore, P2 and direct to G5 in pal land capturing 1080p .Firestore worked great no dropouts , sometimes it wouldn't boot and register with camera and would have to power up and down could have been a firmware issue, the only problem was it was a little noisy for my taste

First shoot - no issues - second shoot resulted in a bunch of 2 minute 16 second clips. The bad news is that I called Tech Support at Focus and the receptionist tried to help me because tech support was busy. I left messages for tech support on two different days 12-19 and 12-20 and nobody has called me back.

I am confident that I will be able to work out the bugs.

Since most of my work is in a studio environment the allure of a DTE capture device is too much to ignore. I love the look and feel of the device as well as the coming firmware upgrades.

I'm using the Zacuto / Noga mounts and it's sweet.
